"I will agree to any kind of condition you offer," Scarlet eagerly said.
"I'm not going to get you to do anything. I want a promise from Lenny first," Marlene said.
"That's better. It's not my problem anyway. Thank you, Grandma. I love you!"
Scarlet kissed Marlene on the cheek several times, and the old lady was amused. She really didn't want Scarlet to sever all her ties with the Foster family.
Marlene had made up her mind to keep Scarlet by her side.
When everything was settled, Scarlet immediately communicated with Lenny and asked him to speed up the wedding arrangements.
Meanwhile, Hamlin drove Marlene to the Foster Group. Soon, the old lady appeared in Lenny's office.
"This is my only condition. Now, it's up to you. If you agree, the wedding will be held immediately. I won't make things difficult for your mother anymore in the future, and I will accept Rosaline as my granddaughter-in-law.
Otherwise, I will leave a will. If you insist on marrying that woman, you will be expelled from the family. If you are not a member of my family, I will leave the Foster Group under my relatives' children's names.
What do you think, Lenny?"
Marlene was over eighty years old. She was not strong anymore and her eyes were weak. But now, when she looked into Lenny's eyes, she looked shrewd and tough.
Lenny's face darkened.
After a very long time, he finally said, in a somewhat cold manner, "I promise."
"Okay. Go pick Scarlet up as soon as the wedding is over."
"I will, Grandma." He lowered his head, his long and thick eyelashes covering the look in his deep-set eyes. Complicated emotions began to surge in his heart.
When Nita found out she was going to be finally, publicly wed to Jamal, tears of excitement welled up in her eyes.
Her long-cherished wish, that she had held dearly so many years, was finally coming true!
Jamal had been feeling very guilty. They had never held a wedding ceremony, and she had never been accepted as a proper member of the Foster family by people in the upper-class social circles. She was the main source of gossip and negative attention at functions and banquets.
Jamal had always showered her with love and affection as a result of this guilt.
At her age, Nita didn't attach great importance to pomp and ceremony. She kept a low profile, and she didn't invite media attention.
She chose a church she liked and invited only close relatives and friends to attend their wedding ceremony. That was all she did in terms of socializing.
She knew it was Scarlet who had persuaded Marlene and was deeply grateful to her.
She requested Scarlet to pick the wedding dress with her, while Jamal and Lenny went to the mall to buy other things.
Jamal attached great importance to this wedding. He didn't feel comfortable leaving this affair to others. He had personally ordered all the roses in the church.
When Scarlet walked into the dress shop, she was immediately dazzled by all the wedding dresses on display.
Every girl dreamed of wearing her own beautiful, white wedding dress and marrying her beloved man. She browsed through some options, but eventually was drawn to a particular one.
It was an off-the-shoulder dress with intricate lace work. The upper part of the dress was embroidered with some floral designs, and it had an overall high-end look to it.
She couldn't identify the material that it was made of. It was smooth and comfortable at the same time.
However, it was the long train that really marveled her.
She couldn't take her eyes off of that dress. She was rooted to the spot for a while and even forgot why she had come there in the first place.
On the other side, Nita had chosen a dress herself. When she found Scarlet rooted to the spot, she realized what must have happened.
"You like it?"
"What? No, no... I was just browsing casually."
Scarlet hurried to conceal her true thoughts.
"Try it if you like it. It's no big deal. You and Lenny didn't even have a decent wedding. He left you alone for a year. The Fosters are really sorry about what happened; you deserve better. Try it on as a means of fulfilling my wish. I would also like to see what you look like in a wedding dress.
I've chosen one, too. Let's go and try them on together, okay?"
Scarlet couldn't refuse. How could any girl, when there were so many beautiful dresses to choose from?
Scarlet gathered her courage and nodded. She kept telling herself that it wasn't a big deal. She would put the dress back on the rack after trying it out.
