I barely remembered the drive home. My knuckles were white on the steering wheel, my heart still hammering in my chest. The second I pulled into the driveway, I slammed the car into park and jumped out, barely remembering to shut the door behind me.
“Laura!” I called, shoving the front door open so hard it hit the wall. My voice echoed through the house.
No answer.
My stomach clenched. I called her name again, louder this time, my feet already carrying me toward the kitchen.
Then I saw her.
Standing in front of the open fridge, a spoon in her mouth, eyes wide like a deer caught in headlights.
“Guilty…” she mumbled around the spoon, her lips curving into a sheepish smile. “You found me.”
The spoon clinked softly against her teeth as she pulled it out, licking the last bit of ice cream from it.
But I didn’t care about the ice cream.
I didn’t care about anything except her.

my arms around her and kissing her with everything I had. Every ounce of rage, fear, relief, and love poured into that kiss.
Fuck.
I was so damn happy she was here. That I got her back.
That she was mine.
“I love you, Laura,” I murmured against her lips, my hands framing her face, my thumbs brushing over her cheekbones. “I love you and only you.”
She blinked up at me, slightly breathless, her hands resting against my chest. “I know, babe. I love you too.” Her brows furrowed. “Are you okay?”
I swallowed hard.
The police called–I knew about Vivien. But how the hell was supposed to tell her? How could I look her in the eyes and say Hey babe, turns out the woman who tried to steal my life was also drugging you in the hospital.
So I didn’t.
Instead, I tucked a strand of damp hair behind her ear and exhaled slowly. “The police called,” I admitted. “I know about Vivien.”
Laura blinked, then sighed. “Oh. Yeah. That.” She shrugged, reaching for the ice cream tub again. “I felt sorry for her, you know. I didn’t want to make a scene, but the barista called the police.”
She had no idea.
