Nightless Elder sat cross-legged on his podium, his long, white hair falling straight down his back as he stared at Wilbur with twinkling eyes. "That's a good question. Well, I can tell you that there's not much of a difference between the Eternal Sunshine Dimension and the Earth dimension. The people in both dimensions are of flesh and blood."
The answer frustrated Wilbur, and he asked, "Then why is this challenge so cruel? Can't there just be a fake dimension, like in that mirage? Those villagers would have escaped such a tragic fate if the Eternal Sunshine Dimension was fake, just like the mirage!"
Wilbur gritted his teeth. "They wouldn't have had to die then!"
Nightless Elder responded, "I understand how you feel, Wilbur. But you must know that death is just as unavoidable as life is. It's part of the dimensional laws. You would never be able to truly learn the essence of some things if you kept on cultivating in fake dimensions like the mirage."
"The essence?"
Wilbur was furious. "What essence? Should a cultivator never become a dimension guardian? Is the only way to defeat the Night Demons and complete the challenge while having to watch those monsters harm more innocent people?"
Nightless Elder stroked his beard, falling silent for a beat. "You're just talking about problems you happened to face. Maybe other people might not run into such problems."
"What?"
Wilbur frowned at Nightless Elder, who continued to say, "The essence I was talking to you about is actually a very simple thing. Change is inevitable in the universe, and some people will eventually be forced to play a part in deciding on these changes, even if they end up choosing wrong. It's all the same, as long as you choose an outcome you find best."
After a brief pause, he added, "A peach is just as sweet and tasty as an orange. But if you chose the peach, someone would have taken the orange. And if you chose the orange, someone would have taken the peach. In fact, both the peach and the orange might be taken away if you take too long to decide. A cultivator must learn how to choose, and when to give a good answer to things. Take your battle against the snake man on Emerald Mountain, for example. Had you killed the snake man right then and there, he would not have had the chance to kill all the people of Leafy Village."
