Chapter 96
“Since you know your place, stop chasing after men who don’t want you. Understand?” Fiona’s voice cut through the tension as she entered the room, carrying several containers of food.
Clad in a sharp business suit, Fiona exuded a cold and commanding presence that sent a chill through the room.
Elena froze, her face stiff with embarrassment. ‘Aunt Fiona, I… I was just…”
“Dexter and Angela are a proper married couple. They have the right and duty to care for each other,” Fiona said calmly, her expression unreadable. “As an outsider, a polite inquiry is more than enough. There’s no need to go out of your way, and certainly no need to show up looking so elaborately dressed when Angela is sick and unwell.”
Elena’s eyes reddened like a scolded child’s. She stammered, “Aunt Fiona, you’ve misunderstood. I only think of Dexter as a close friend. I… I…”
Halfway through, her voice faltered.
Back when Dexter and Angela’s relationship was on rocky ground, rumors about Elena and Dexter had circulated within their social circles. Elena had never denied them.
Now, she wanted to explain herself, but she didn’t dare to be too definitive. Caught between her intentions and reality, she stood there helplessly.
“No need to explain. Just leave,” Fiona said bluntly, showing no leniency. “And in the future, unless it’s urgent, don’t contact Dexter again.”
Humiliated, Elena left with a pitiful expression, casting one last wistful glance at Dexter as though pleading for sympathy.
“Mom, Elena doesn’t mean any harm,” Dexter sighed, clearly uncomfortable.
From the start, he had seen Elena as nothing more than a kindred spirit. Later, when their names became entangled in rumors, he was aware of them but hadn’t cared enough to address them. At the time, he had been too fed up with Angela to bother clearing things up.
Still, he felt a pang of guilt for dragging Elena into the mess between him and Angela. Now, standing in this awkward situation, he couldn’t deny his share of the responsibility.
“You, out,” Fiona commanded without hesitation. “Go cool off somewhere else. Angela is recovering, and if you upset her, you’ll stop being my son.”
Dexter was promptly ushered out.
The room now contained only Fiona and Angela.
Angela didn’t care about what had just happened. Her attention shifted to the food Fiona

had brought.
To her surprise, Fiona opened eight containers, revealing a variety of healthy meals that smelled enticing but looked particularly bland.
“Pick one. For the next three days, this is all you’ll eat,” Fiona declared.
Angela sighed. Wanting to recover quickly and return to work, she chose a bowl of savory mushroom and pork oatmeal and began eating slowly.
Fiona watched her closely, as if holding back from speaking.
“What’s on your mind, Mom?” Angela asked between bites. “By the way, how are things with the household staff? Are they listening to you? Do you need me to step in?”
