Mamie and Caley locked eyes on Scales, making him feel a tad uncomfortable under their intense gaze.
Scratching his head, Scales muttered, "Why are you guys staring at me like that?"
It was kind of awkward.
"Mason, what exactly does your family do?" Mamie asked, her curiosity piqued.
Roseanne chimed in, "I remember you mentioned last time that your parents are... civil servants, right?"
It was clear that these were no ordinary "civil servants."
She left it at that, not prying any further.
Mamie might have been a bit too bold at times, but she was sharp. She had heard that offspring of high-ranking officials tend to keep a low profile. It made sense why he hadn't mentioned it before, so she didn't push the subject.
Scales breathed a sigh of relief.
"I'll do my best to make it happen."
"Alright."
Mamie: "For the sake of the lab—"
Scales: "And to avoid getting kicked out again—"
Both looked at Roseanne, who, caught off guard, instinctively responded, "Charge?"
"Charge!!!"
…
No sooner said than done, the trio sprang into action.
Mamie stepped out of the apartment building and immediately dialed her dad—
"Hey~ Dad, had your dinner yet?"
"Yep, yep! What about you?"
"Not yet…" Mamie's voice suddenly turned whiny.
Her dad knew something was up the moment he heard that. If his precious daughter was skipping meals, it must be serious.
"Tell me what's going on, sweetheart."
