As those words echoed through the air, Abbey snapped back to reality.
She was still giving Cordelia puzzled looks. Why had her brother given that gem to this girl?
While she pondered, Joy was already flapping her hands in a panic. It had been ages since she spoke, and managing anything beyond a few words was a stretch for her.
Mrs. Collins noticed Joy's demeanor and realized Abbey wasn't fond of Cordelia. She frowned deeply. The Robinsons were not a family to be trifled with, nor could she afford to offend them. Yet Abbey was Bill's beloved sister, and she couldn't let a guest, especially Cordelia, who had once helped Joy, be insulted under her roof!
With these thoughts flashing through her mind, Mrs. Collins made up her mind to protect Cordelia.
Upon hearing Hayley's words, Mrs. Brown also quickly understood the situation. Was Hayley making things difficult for Cordelia on Abbey's behalf? No wonder she had caused such a scene at the gathering, despite Mrs. Brown's objections.
But then, when everyone had criticized Mrs. Delaney's paintings, even though Mrs. Brown thought Mrs. Delaney had a unique perspective, she hadn't spoken up for her. She had felt quite embarrassed about it afterward, fearing a rift, only to realize Mrs. Delaney hadn't taken it to heart...
Mrs. Brown decided then and there; she wouldn't let history repeat itself, allowing someone to tarnish the Delaney family's name, especially not someone she had brought into the mix.
So, Mrs. Brown was the first to speak up, "It's just a little squabble between kids. Why make a fuss about right and wrong? But shouting and causing a scene in public is unacceptable. Look at Ms. Delaney, and now look at yourself. What do you think you're doing? Quiet down immediately!"
Hayley, expecting her name-dropping Abbey to work in her favor, was shocked to find Mrs. Brown scolding her instead. Thinking she might never be invited out again, Hayley desperately looked to Abbey for support, blurting out, "Ms. Robinson!"
Before Abbey could respond, Mrs. Collins, fearing Abbey might say something harsh, quickly intervened, "Enough, let's not make a big deal out of a little argument..." She shot Abbey a look, hoping she'd spare Cordelia for her sake.
But Abbey suddenly spoke up, "I saw what happened clearly!"
Mrs. Collins frowned, her heart sinking at Abbey's stubbornness!
Hayley, on the other hand, felt relieved, "Yes, it's her fault. People like her shouldn't even be at gatherings like this!"
Abbey scowled, "I can't believe Greenmeadow still harbors such people. Gossipy, ruining first impressions, and their flattery is almost written all over their face. Absolutely unbearable!"
Hayley continued, "So, let's kick her out!"
Abbey turned to Mrs. Collins, "Yes, Auntie, let's have her leave!"
Mrs. Collins was about to object when she realized Abbey was actually referring to Hayley?
Hayley, basking in her supposed victory over Cordelia, saw Mrs. Brown's face turn beet red. She nodded, "Yes, I brought her, and I'll take her away. This is too embarrassing. Mrs. Collins, we'll catch up another time!"
Hayley, confused, exclaimed, "Aunt, you can't take me away. I still want to hang out with Ms. Robinson... Ms. Robinson... you... you..." It dawned on her that Abbey had been pointing at her all along.
"You're kicking me out?" she asked in disbelief.
Abbey nodded, "Why should I let you stay? To continue stirring trouble between me and Cordelia? Before I even met Cordelia, you claimed she was passing off a box of rocks as gems..."
She stepped forward, pointing at the bracelet on Cordelia's wrist, "This is clearly a gem!"
Hayley was stunned, "A gem? How is that possible!"
Abbey scoffed, "Did you think I couldn't recognize one?"
