“As a matter of fact, I think the two of you should be seeking penance!” I snapped. “You should live out the rest of your lives in a chapel–praying for Juianne and repenting for your sins. Only then will both of you be able to make it up to her!”
I looked at them, lifting an eyebrow. “So hurry up, get your savings and assets in order, and transfer them over to Julianne. Then, go spend the rest of your lives in penance! finished coolly.
Mom and Henry both stared at me in disbelief. It was as though I had said something absurd.
A long silence followed before Mom finally snapped out of her shock.
“Are you out of your mind?” she yelled.
Her reaction didn’t surprise me. After all, if she transferred all her money and assets to Julianne, she would have trouble getting by.
Where would she get money to spend? It was one thing to depend on close relatives for money, let alone an adopted daughter. Regardless, she would still prefer to rely on herself.
I furrowed my brow in feigned concern, pretending not to understand her.
“Why do you say that? Don’t tell me you can’t bear to part with what you own, Mom? Julianne is your precious daughter. She had to endure despicable things because you failed to protect her, yet you can’t even give up a small portion of your wealth?”
I gasped dramatically before continuing. “Is this what you call motherly love? Don’t you think you’re being too hypocritical? Julianne has already suffered so much, yet you don’t wish to see her be happy or live comfortably.‘
Then, for added measure, I intentionally exclaimed, “How evil! You truly are the most cruel mother in the whole world!”
I was paying Mom back in kind for calling me vicious and vile.
She stared at me in shock. But this time, she quickly recovered.
“How dare you, Millicent Quill!” she shrieked. “How dare you say that about me! How am I at fault for what happened to Lianne? How am I being evil? How could you call me a cruel mother!”
Mom truly never expected me to say such things about her. She also believed she shouldn’t be blamed for what happened. After all, it had nothing to do with her.
“Julianne was kidnapped because you failed to protect her,” I said matter–of–factly. “Otherwise, how could this have happened?”
I confidently placed the blame on her shoulders. Let her experience what it felt to be guilt–tripped, only then would she finally know how it felt to be frustrated beyond words.
“You… You…” Mom sputtered.
She was furious but she couldn’t think of what to say. She was usually so quick–witted, but my rebuttal rendered her speechless.
Henry had intended to speak up too. But when he saw the state Mom was in, he kept quiet. The murderous felt toward me instantly faded as well.

In reality, there was no need to point these things out. If they thought about it themselves, they would know I wasn’t to blame for what happened to Julianne.
“They were well aware of how seriously I had been injured before. So, they had an idea how terrible my fate would have been if the kidnappers had gotten hold of me.
They just needed someone to blame and decided to force it on me. Julianne had suffered a terrible ordeal, after all, so they had to do something for her. Otherwise, they would be seen as cold–hearted and unloving
Just like Quinton and Landon, my family merely appeared to cherish Julianne and treat her well. In truth, it was all just a facade. They just wanted to oppress me and force me to give way to Julianne unconditionally.
