“Your mother believed Julianne’s father would’ve continued to pine after her if she didn’t have you with her that day. That was why, after that, she couldn’t bring herself to treat you well, even though you were her own flesh and blood,” William concluded.
I was floored by this information.
Seeing the dumbfounded look on my face, he couldn’t help but gently and sympathetically pat my head again.
“So, forget about your mother. She’s not worthy of your care,” he advised.
I was still at a loss for words.
Fortunately, I had already given up on Mom long ago because I had become fed up with being disappointed by her. That was why, no matter how absurd things got with her, I could accept it. Hence, I was able to get over my shock quickly.
“And Julianne…” I started to ask.
“She can’t move right now. Because of her frail health, your father administered many different drugs to boost her immune system in the past,” William explained.
“However, even he doesn’t know what exactly he gave Julianne that resulted in the unique antibody in her blood. So, she’ll need to be under observation for a while.”
I was pensive for some time before asking, “Did you ask Henry to list all the drugs he administered to Julianne?”
“He claimed he doesn’t really remember.”
I frowned. “He said that?”
William was about to just hum in response. But then, he paused, suddenly realizing something. “Why? Do you think something’s off about what he said?” he asked.
“Yes. Henry may forget other things, but he has a natural affinity for drugs. So, even if his memory fails him, there’s no way he would forget what he has used on others. He likely lied to you!”
“Don’t think so—I gave him truth serum,” William instinctively argued.
My family was in the pharmaceutical industry, so naturally, I knew all about truth serums.
“He’s definitely lying if that’s what you used on him. Truth serums are a type of psychoactive drug. While it is effective when used on others, it’s pretty much useless on someone like Henry.”
Truth serums were actually just sodium thiopental, which was a type of barbiturate. It was a drug that put people in a sedated- hypnotic state, making them more likely to tell the truth. And Henry had long since thoroughly studied this type of drug.
“Henry’s research was always focused on shady and illegal drugs. In fact, he has worked on a lot of substances that go beyond psychoactive drugs, like truth serums. And because his research area focuses on illegal drugs, he can’t let anyone find out about them, let alone conduct human trials.
“So, he often uses himself as a test subject when developing these drugs. As such, psychoactive drugs, like truth serums, are basic stuff to him. They don’t affect him at all.”
“…It seems I’ve underestimated your father,” William admitted.
“You’re not to blame,” I replied. “All of the drugs Henry worked on are illegal, and Grandma oversees his research very strictly. She doesn’t allow any of them to end up on the market. In fact, a lot of the drugs he has developed are unknown to the Quill family. So, you couldn’t possibly have uncovered this.”
Henry would surely be arrested if any of his drugs ended up on the market. That was why Grandma monitored him so strictly. That being said, some of the drugs he’d developed could be modified for other uses.
