William made sure everyone knew it wasn’t me who was the problem. It was my parents who were messed up in the head. He wanted to ensure no one would ever dare look at me with those udgmental eyes again.
Irvin watched as William fiercely stood up for me, unable to tolerate even the slightest grievance against me. No one was allowed to hurt me, not even a little.
Whatever part of Irvin’s heart hadn’t already died completely finally did. He realized he didn’t even have the right to feel hurt
anymore.
Later, when William was alone, Irvin approached him. After signaling he wanted to talk, they stepped into a quiet corner. “Our deal to take down the Keller family is almost coming to an end. Do you want to keep working together?” Irvin asked.
He had previously asked William if he wanted to team up to completely bring down the Keller family, ensuring Grace lost everything and paid a heavy price.
Now, that collaboration was nearing its end.
William raised an eyebrow. He hadn’t expected that. Given how obsessed Irvin was with me, he figured Irvin would be falling apart at the engagement party, not calmly talking about business.
Leaning lazily against the ornate railing, William gave him a look. And what exactly do you want to collaborate on?”
Irvin didn’t beat around the bush. “I want Emi to take over Hardwell Group.”
William’s eyes narrowed. The relaxed expression vanished, replaced by something unreadable and razor sharp.
He couldn’t tell what Irvin was thinking. But Irvin didn’t care what William thought of him. He just wanted to know if William was in or not.
Originally, Irvin planned to gain control of the Hardwell family and burn it to the ground as payback for everything they had done to him.
Now? He wanted out. He wanted to hand the entire family empire over to me.
He had never considered doing that before because he knew I had no interest in business, experience, or desire to be part of that world. Giving me something so massive would’ve just put me in danger.
But things were different now.
I was going to marry William, a man capable of protecting me and managing that kind of power. With him by my side, all that wealth wouldn’t be a threat—it would be security.
William stood up straight. “What are you really trying to say?”
Irvin couldn’t read William’s expression, and William couldn’t figure him out either.
William could understand why Irvin would team up with him against Grace–given how obsessed Irvin had been with me, there was no way he would’ve willingly gotten involved with Grace and had a child with her unless he’d been set up.
Grace had cost him his last chance with me. Wanting her dead made perfect sense.
But handing over Hardwell Group to me? That was something William just couldn’t wrap his head around.
He didn’t know what Irvin was planning.
His first instinct was that Irvin couldn’t stand seeing me with someone else. Irvin was trying to bait him and set a trap using the Hardwell family.
After all, William had seen the worst of humanity. He knew how people tore each other apart for money. He had seen people kill
