No matter what William did, he would always place Noah's and Ava's safety first. That was why he hadn't told Noah I had been abducted.

Noah had also been hiding because he wasn't sure how to face the news of my engagement to William. He hadn't known I'd been captured, either.

William had looked so gloomy earlier, as though something terrible had happened. That was why Noah had thought something had happened to me.

But William didn't respond. He just turned his head to stare out the window and into the night. Then, still looking somber, he took drag after drag of his cigarette.

Noah had never seen his uncle like this before. He couldn't help but ask, "What's going on with you, Uncle Will?"

I had been successfully rescued and was also unharmed. So, shouldn't his Uncle Will be elated?

Still, William said nothing. He just continued smoking with the same solemn expression on his face.
