Irvin opened his mouth like he wanted to say something, but before he could, Julianne clutched her stomach with a pained expression. “Irvin my stomach hurts so bad…”

Her dramatic display immediately erased everything else from his find. He scooped her up in his arms without hesitation.

As he turned to leave, he suddenly glanced back at me. “Emilia, if you want to get the divorce certificate smoothly, you’d better keep your distance from him.”

He shot me a hard look. “I’ll deal with you when I get back.” And with that, he rushed off, carrying Julianne like some helpless damsel

I couldn’t stop myself from rolling my eyes so hard it hurt.

What a joke. Deal with me? Please.

I used to be so blind. I mean, how did I ever put up with that?

Shaud, watching Irvin’s antics, said thoughtfully, “It’s ironic, really. He demands you keep your distance from other men, but he doesn’t even think twice about parading another woman in front of his own wife.”

He looked at me and added calmly, “Don’t let him intimidate you. This is the modern world–he doesn’t have that kind of power over you anymore.”

“Yeah,” I replied.

Oddly enough, Irvin’s little outburst had completely killed the nerves I’d been feeling. Shaun even joked that it might’ve been a blessing in disguise, and honestly, he wasn’t wrong

Still, as we reached Mr. Holland’s door, hesitation crept back in.

Shaun noticed and was about to say something when I heard someone call out, “Emilia?”

I instinctively turned around, startled by the familiar voice.

“It is you!”

Walking toward me was a middle–aged woman. It took me a moment to place her–she was the mom of my brother’s girlfriend, Lily Walker.

Before I could say a word, Mrs. Walker spoke. “I was just thinking about getting in touch with you. Since we ran into each other, this saved me the trouble. When Lily comes out later, you can join us. You need to meet her cousin! He’s staying at my place for a few days.”

I frowned, confused. “…What?”

“It’s the perfect time for you two to meet. Lily told me you’re getting divorced, and my nephew’s recently divorced, too. You’re both single now, so why not talk about getting remarried?”

I was confused, but she didn’t even pause to let me process her words. “You’re lucky I’m giving you this chance. Frankly, with just a bachelor’s degree, you’re not exactly on my nephew’s level. He’s a double Ph.D. from Amberton, you know! But since you’ll be Lily’s sister–in–law someday, I’m being generous.”

I just stared at her..

“And let’s not forget,” she added smugly, “it’ll be your second marriage. Four years married, and not a single child to show for it. Honestly, who knows if you can even have kids?”

I opened my mouth, but she kept going, oblivious to how ridiculous she sounded. “If Lily hadn’t said…”

She trailed off, but I knew what she meant–if Lily hadn’t mentioned I’d be walking away from my divorce with a decent chunk of cash, this conversation wouldn’t even be happening
