Irvin’s eyes were bloodshot as he stared at Julianne on the edge of the rooftop.

“Millie,” she said, her voice trembling “I know you hate me because Mom and Dad adopted me and divided their love. I know you blame me for that. But I’ve always treated you like a real sister, Why? Why do you keep hurting me like this?”

Tears welled in her eyes, and her voice cracked. “What did I ever do to deserve this? Why do you want me dead? Why can’t you just let me live?”

Before I could respond, she laughed bitterly, her shoulders shaking as if she’d resigned herself to some tragic fate. “No, it doesn’t matter anymore. Nothing matters anymore. Millie, I’ll end it all tonight. I’ll give you back your perfect family. Is that what you want?”

As she spoke, she let go of the railing, her body tilting forward slightly as if she were about to jump.

But her foot slipped. Startled, she instinctively grabbed the railing again, gripping it tightly.

Irvin took a step toward her, his entire body tense.

“Lianne, please, don’t do this…” Irvin’s voice cracked with desperation as he tried to calm her down.

Before he could say anything else, Dad grabbed my arm and yanked me forward.

“You useless wretch! Get over there and beg Julianne for forgiveness! If she refuses to forgive you and won’t come down, then you might as well jump with her!”

Before I could react, he forced me to my knees in front of her.

Julianne’s lips curled into a subtle, venomous smile as she watched me kneel, but her voice was as soft and saintly as ever.

“Dad, don’t treat Millie like that. She doesn’t need to apologize. Just… let her come over here,” she said sweetly. “Let her tell me why she hates me so much, why she doesn’t want me to live. I just want to hear it from her before I go.”

I narrowed my eyes. It was obvious she wanted me to get close enough for her to create some “accident” that would push me over the edge.

“No, Dad,” I said firmly, cutting through the tension. “Don’t let me go over there. If I do, and she really ends her life after talking to me, wouldn’t that just give her the closure she’s looking for?”

The absurdity of my words seemed to hit Dad, making him freeze mid–action.

Even Julianne’s face twitched with disbelief at my audacity. For a moment, the freezing wind carried an awkward silence.

But before Dad could reconsider, Irvin strode forward, his face cold and determined.
