Anna never imagined that man would bring trouble to Chloe again.
After the pain and hardships that Chloe had been through and now pregnant on top of it all, Anna had temporarily moved in to take care of her.
Though Chloe's past was sorrowful, seeing Carter treat her with such tender care made Anna feel that perhaps the worst had finally passed.
Whenever she saw Carter gently tending to Chloe, her thoughts always drifted to him.
People said he was lost at sea, but Anna never believed it. Deep down, she always felt it was just a ruse the Carlyns had set up for revenge.
Yet, as the days went by with no news, Carter could not even find any trace of him. Amber had vanished too.
Anna's anxiety grew. The downfall of both the Sanders and the Carlyns was all thanks to the Commander's wife. That woman was cunning enough to have placed some of the Carlyns in her trap long before any of them saw it coming.
Anna couldn't stop thinking if Taylor was really dead or lost in the ocean.
The longer he stayed gone, the more uneasy Anna became.
That man had been by her side for twenty years—longer than anyone from the Sanders. How could she not miss him?
Outside, the rain poured down in torrents. Anna walked into it without quite knowing why.
She remembered how the weather had changed so suddenly on the island once. She was at the mountain's peak, visiting the Carlyns' graves, when a fierce storm rolled in.
She was terrified when thunder roared and the wind howled.
That was when Taylor had appeared like a guardian from the sky. He took off his coat, draped it over her head, and carried her home.
Now, she wasn't afraid of walking through the storm. Not anymore.
All she could think about was the day they parted—how Taylor had only asked for a hug.
He'd cared for me all those years. A hug was all he wanted.
Why couldn't I give him that? If he's really gone, would that be his greatest regret?
Soaked to the bone, Anna heartbrokenly collapsed to her knees.
Back when she was still with Taylor, all she ever dreamed of was freedom—to be reunited with her family, to live her own life.
And now, that dream had come true. Chloe had a second chance. Her family was safe. She could do what she loved.
However, something was missing in this new life. Everything felt hollow.
The Sanders were falling, but there was still plenty of money left. Her father had sold off some properties and given her a large sum.
What could she do with that money?
She didn't know if she should buy clothes and handbags like other girls her age or if she should spend it on fancy cars and big houses.
Material things never mattered to her. Taylor had given her everything since she was young.
Even her pajamas had been custom-designed with the finest fabrics.
All she had ever truly wanted was to see her family again. And now that she had, she had nothing left to chase.
Without Taylor, she couldn't survive in this world.
He had become like the air—silent, invisible, but essential.
"Taylor," she whispered, "weren't you always afraid I'd get sick in the rain? Then come out and see me.
"Are you really dead?
