Chapter 129
It wasn’t until Lisa handed me the freshly brewed coffee that she finally said, ” Chris is such a jerk. I never realized how awful he was until he showed his true colors.”
I took a couple of sips of the coffee. “Turns out, he was just pitying me.”
Even though Chris and I had broken up the great memories of our past still lingered in my heart. But today, his words shattered the fragile facade around those cherished moments.
Lisa gently squeezed my shoulder. “It’s not too late to see him for what he really is.”
I stayed silent.
Lisa nudged me. “Do you want to get back at him?”
“What?” I felt utterly defeated.
Chris‘ words had ripped open oft wounds, exposing the most painful part of my life.
But he was right about one thing. After the car accident, when my parents lay in the cold morgue, I was left alone in the world. I had no idea what to do.
I was even afraid to go home. There were moments I thought about dying, too, just so I could be with my parents again.
When Zack and Bree appeared and hugged me, telling me they would be my new family, I finally stopped being afraid.
They were like lifelines to me, and I clung to them, believing that the world still had love for me.
So, I misinterpreted Chris‘ smile when we first met. In hindsight, it probably wasn’t kindness but mockery, right?
But at that time, I saw his smile as a beacon of hope.
“You should start dating someone or even get married. Show Chris you’re serious and that you can live perfectly fine without him. Make him realize that you’re not dependent on him.”

Lisa turned my shoulders to face her gaze.
“Guys like him need to feel the heat before they understand pain.”
Her grip on my shoulders tightened. I could tell she was angry and flustered at Chris, too.
I gave a bitter smile. “You think this is some kind of TV show where you can just start dating on command?”
“Well, life inspires TV shows. This is the only way to free yourself from Chris and make him snap out of it,” Lisa encouraged me.
I lowered my gaze, and she continued, “Brandon would be perfect for this.”
“No way! Definitely not him.” I shook my head.
Brandon already had feelings for me. If I asked him to pretend to be my boyfriend, he might take it seriously, and that would only complicate things.
“He’s the best choice. The perfect candidate,” Lisa insisted.
