I didn't know why I felt like crying. My heart felt heavy and swollen, like a sponge soaked with water.
Maybe it was because someone finally showed me some care again in this house without my parents, a place where I felt so neglected.
Or maybe it was because Brandon understood me. Maybe he knew that even though I had left the amusement park, my heart was still tied to it.
I kept looking at the note repeatedly. When I finally took it down and left the bathroom, I saw the thermos and the fried egg on the small dining table in the kitchen.
At that moment, I pressed the note to my chest, and tears started rolling down my cheeks.
I didn’t take Brandon’s effort for granted. After eating the breakfast he made for me, I sent him a message. "Thank you."
These two words seemed so simple, but I couldn’t just take his kindness for granted.
After sending the message, I started tinkering with the things I bought from the night market last night. Before I could get far, my phone rang.
For a split second, my heart raced. I was filled with anticipation.
But when I saw the number, my heart rate became normal again. I sighed and answered the call. "Mr. Yates."
Gordon cleared his throat first. "Ms. Crown, have you found a new job?"
The question came out of nowhere. I said while nodding, "Yes, is there something you need?"
Gordon cleared his throat again and instead of answering, he asked another question. "Have you started?"
I could sense that he had something to say, "Mr. Yates, just say what you need to say."
"Uh, no, nothing. Just checking in," Gordon replied evasively.
I scoffed lightly. "Mr. Yates, if you care so much, just say it directly instead of beating around the bush."
