“Thank you for accepting him and loving him, Mae.” As she said that, she handed me a cup of tea, her eyes shining eagerly.

Ellie pursed her lips. I took the teacup and sipped from it.

“Of course. Why else would I come all the way here? I wanted to come see you, and…” I looked around, shaking my head lightly. 

Ellie stared at me curiously with those big beautiful eyes of hers. “And what?” 

I could tell that she was a sensitive person, especially when it came to her brother. I told her what I had in mind. “I wanted to take you back. But now that I’ve seen this beautiful life of yours, I feel like I don’t have the right to take you away.” 

Although she could stay at my place and she’d never have to suffer a day in her life, that house would feel like a cage to her. How could she feel free and at ease in a place like that? 

I understood why Brandon left her alone here now. This place was full of nature. It was calming and soothing. 

“I’ll go with you if you take me,” Ellie said, quickly agreeing to it. 

I was stunned. “Won’t you miss this place?” 

She held up her cup and sipped on it, saying nothing. 

I could sense her hesitation. She couldn’t bear to leave the freedom she had here, but she seemed to want to leave as well. 

Perhaps it was just human nature. It wasn’t greediness, just human desire to explore the things that were beyond our reach 

Ellie’s condition made her unable to go everywhere freely like the other girls. Maybe the beautiful life she had that I envied was actually her cage.
