Chapter 216
My sudden hug caught Brandon off guard. His body stiffened at the contact. After a brief pause, I heard him ask in a low voice, “Are you pitying me?”
“I feel sorry for you!” I corrected him.
Brandon didn’t respond, nor did he hug me back. It left me feeling a little awkward, Just as I was about to pull away, I looked up and saw Chris standing nearby,
Was he here today too? Somehow, Kara, that big mouth, hadn’t mentioned it.
My hands tightened again just as they were about to release Brandon. He tried to pull away. I held his hand firmly. “Don’t move.”
He stopped while I continued to hug him. “Are you working overtime today?”
Brandon asked, “What?”
I tip–toed and whispered close to his ears. “I miss your cooking.”
I heard the sound of his throat swallowing loudly in my ear, followed by a soft” “Okay.”
A shiver ran through me and I glanced in Chris‘ direction. I saw him clenching his fists, his expression darkening as he finally turned and walked away.

He started walking and seemingly forgot about me. I stood there while feeling uncertain about whether to follow or stay put.
Embarrassed by my childish behavior from before, I lowered my gaze and was about to let out a sigh when I heard Brandon’s voice. “Are you coming?”
I looked up and met his clear, dark eyes. There wasn’t a hint of emotion in them, as if nothing had happened at all.
He was a master at controlling and concealing his emotions. Just moments ago, he had clearly been upset. However, within seconds, he was back to being unreadable.
“Maddie, you should come see this. There’s a lot of damage and it’s really frustrating.” Kara grumbled as she beckoned me over.
Even though I hadn’t been around lately, I still cared about what was going on. I quickly followed them. I wasn’t sure if I walked too fast or I tripped over something, but I suddenly stumbled forward.
Brandon reached out to catch me and I fell into his arms. His movement was so smooth it was like a
