Chapter 227
I thought of that contact. “Your father’s death was likely because of my father. I need to investigate this to get to the bottom of it.”
Brandon looked at me. “Did you find something out?”
“What about you? Why are you looking for Arthur? Why are you suspicious of him?” I turned the question back on him.
He stood up and walked over to the window. His tall, strong figure looked like he could handle anything, even if the sky were to fall.
Seeing him like that, I set down my teacup and walked over to the window. “Brandon, I understand you must have discovered something too. This is dangerous, and you don’t want me involved. But since this concerns my parents, there’s no way I can stay out of it.”
I gazed out at the moonlight. “I’m not that foolish. I can take care of myself. Besides, you’re here with me, right?”
Brandon glanced at me. After a moment, he finally said, “You’re just as stubborn as you were when you were a kid.”
I smiled at his words and turned to face him. “Brandon, you must’ve known my identity for a while. Did you approach me just to investigate your father’s death?”
His brows furrowed. “Is that what you think?”
“Yes.”
His lips parted as if he was about to say something, but then just gave a helpless smile. “Is my charm that worthless to you?”
I didn’t quite get what he meant. “Huh?”
“Heartless,” Brandon muttered. Then, he stepped away from the window and said, “Finish your tea and go to sleep.”
“And you? What are you going to do?” I couldn’t believe I blurted out
another question like that.
Without turning around, he walked into his bedroom. Just before closing the door, he replied, “Read.”
I watched the door shut and couldn’t help but smile. I finished the tea, then looked at the cartoon cup he had gotten just for me and gave it a quick kiss before heading to my room.
I lay down on the couch and sent a text to Derick, letting him know I was
home.
Then I made a video call to Lisa. I thought it would be another one of those times she wouldn’t pick up, but this time she did.
“Why didn’t you go to work today?” I asked when I saw she was at home.
“Day off,” she replied.
“Hmm, you’re wearing makeup? Did you go out? On a date?” I noticed something was off from the video call with Lisa.
She turned the camera away. “No, you’re mistaken.”
“Stop avoiding me and just come clean,” I said. I was fully aware of her
reserved demeanor.
Lisa adjusted the camera back but had already wiped off her lipstick from her lips. “What’s there to explain? Isn’t it all for your future sister–in–law?”
I was surprised. “You went to see your senior, Keith Marrow? Didn’t you say we were going to see him together next week?”
“He came back early, and the professor arranged a meeting for us,” Lisa explained briefly.
But I already grasped the main point. “So, how did it go?”
“What do you mean, how did it go?” Lisa brushed it off with a casual tone.
“I mean your situation with Keith. Is he still single?” I asked.
Lisa snickered on the other end. “Maddie, shouldn’t you be more concerned about what he has to say about your future sister–in–law’s
