Chapter 306
“This is she. Who’s on the line?” I asked as I furtively glanced in Chris‘ direction.
He didn’t appear to have seen me. I watched him walk toward a nearby empty chair and sat down.
“I’m Agent A8338 from Forever and Always Insurance Co. I’m calling to inform you that the couple’s insurance you and Mr. Chris Gildon bought four years ago has matured. We’ll need to verify some information with you before we can proceed.”
My skin prickled at this, and I instinctively looked at Brandon. He had been holding me close since we sat down, but he left to give me privacy after I picked up the call. He was always so considerate with me, giving me the sense of security and space I needed.

I couldn’t run or hide even if I wanted to.

“Ms. Crown?” the agent prompted again.
I didn’t know what came over me, but I demanded hotly, “Why don’t you ask Mr. Gildon?”
“We’ve reached out to him. Another one of our agents is verifying the information with him right now.”
Upon hearing this response, I knew Chris was speaking to another agent from Forever and Always Insurance Co.
I should have known the world would find some way to deliver a cruel joke in the guise of a coincidence.
However, the agent seemed intent on drawing out my agony. “We wish you a happy and fulfilling marriage, Ms. Crown. May we interest you and your husband in a married couple’s insurance policy? The investment starts from a one–year minimum, and the longer you stayed married, the greater the yield-”
