Ellie was adamant that Brandon should leave, but I was worried about leaving her alone. 

I had no choice but to ask Lisa for help, even though she was on the night shift. 

“Mrs. Howell, I’m here to work, fot to look after Ellie. You’re asking me to do something outside my job. Aren’t you taking me for granted?” Lisa teased me deliberately. 

“It’s not about looking after her. It’s just that if you have time, check on her to make sure she’s sleeping well,” I explained playfully. 

Lisa huffed. “After all these years, I feel like my bond with you pales in comparison to how you treat Ellie.” 

“Don’t be jealous. You’re irreplaceable in my heart. Even Brandon can’t compare,” I said while giving her a thumbs–up. 

“I’m not Brandon. You don’t need to flatter me,” she said as she examined the ring on my finger. 

“It’s an old model and an old piece. It’s not worth much, but it’s precious because Brandon gave it to you, unlike Chris,” Lisa mentioned. 

I was already indifferent to that part of my past and even joined in the jest, “Maybe I’m just not worth it in Chris‘ mind.” 

“It’s not that you’re unworthy,” she said with a sigh. “It’s more like you being around gave Chris the illusion that you couldn’t leave him, so he didn’t prioritize your feelings.” 

I gave a cynical smile. “It doesn’t matter anymore. It’s all in the past, and he’s gone far away now.” 

“Where did he go?” Lisa asked, picking up on the conversation. 

“I don’t know. He seems to be missing deliberately,” I said, recounting how Bree and Jewel were looking for Chris. 

Lisa looked pensive and said, “I saw Chris coming often to the hospital recently. Could it be that he’s in some trouble?” 

Thinking back to when I was in a coma here after the car accident and saw Chris, I gave a mocking smile. “He’s probably here with Jewel. After all, she’s pregnant now.” 

“That’s possible. But each time I saw him, he seemed to be alone,” Lisa said just as the office door opened. 

“Come in!” She straightened up. 

A man in a delivery uniform walked in. “Are you Dr. Carline?”
