Do you want to hear the truth” Ellie’s cold voice echoed in the car. Alex lifted his gaze and met her eyes. Without a hint of expression, Ellie conued. “If you want to hear it, open the door and let me out first.” 

Alex frowned. After a brief hesitation, he unlocked the car door. Ellie got out but didn’t turn to leave. Her phone still sat in Alex’s hand. 

In the middle of the street, under the dim streetlight, they stood facing each other. Ellie stared into the distance, her tone light as though she were telling a story. Tadmit, during those years I spent with the Warren family, you treated me well 

Ellie went on “Although you always criticized me and made me cry, every time I was at my lowest it was always you who stayed by my side. And every time I had trouble, it was you who risked everything—even your life–to protect me. 

“Back then, you had so many flaws, but to me, you were the best. How could I not fall for someone like you? 

Alex looked down at Ellie, and his voice cracked as he choked out, “Since you remember all that, why are you pushing me away? Why won’t you even give me a chance to make things right!” 

Elbe lifted her head, tears welling up in her eyes. “I want to, but I just can’t.” 

“Ellie” Alex took a step forward, his eyes red as he called her name. 

Ellie took a step back, avoiding him. Unnoticed, tears slipped down her cheek. “When you forced me to help you chase Haley, she was still Aaron’s girlfriend. Did you ever stop to think how hard that was for me? 

You pushed me out of the passenger seat for Haley over and over again. Did you know how humiliating that was for me? 

You 

gave me the gifts Haley didn’t want, made me watch you carve her name on your ring finger, and made me witness you kneeling to propose to her. Did you ever think about how much that hurt me?” 

“When everything was falling apart, you protected Haley and left me alone in that burning theater. You used Aaron’s future to threaten and control me. Do you know how helpless that made me feel? What else could I do, except push you away! 

“Im sorry, it’s all my fault!” Alex’s voice cracked as he broke down. He carefully stepped closer, his eyes filled with undeniable regret and sorrow. 

With tears in his eyes, he struggled to speak, “Ellie, give me one more chance. I’ll find my way back to who I was. I won’t disappoint you again, I 

promise.

Ellie turned to him and met his eyes steadily. “Give you a chance? Then how am I gonna face myself who cried so many tears over you a chance, could you bring my father back to me?” 

Alex stood frozen, his body stiff and trembling, tears falling from his eyes. His chest rose and fell sharply as he struggled to breathe, unable to say another word 

He was lost. His mind was chaotic, but he couldn’t find a way to bridge the gap between them, to fix things so that he could walk toward her like he used to 

Noticing the way Alex was desperately trying to hold it together, Ellie remained calm. “I don’t need you to take responsibility for my life like you did for Haley’s, and I don’t need you to throw money at me to make up for it.” 

The more Ellie said, the more panic clouded Alex’s eyes. “Ellie, even if you don’t want anything from me, you can’t be with Leonard!” 

They stared at each other, and Ellie’s expression grew colder. “The reason you keep preventing me from being with Leonard is because you’re selfish. You can’t face the fact that a woman who has loved you for seven years would let go just like that,” 

Alex’s jaw tightened. “Whatever you say.” 

He didn’t deny it. He knew he was selfish. Somewhere along the way, he had 

the way, he had developed a terrifying possessiveness over Ellic. 

It didn’t matter that he had no position–just the thought of her not on his side, of her showing any care for someone else drove him mad. Then he would get angry, jealous, and unreasonalde. 

He couldn’t stop himself from overthinking, being petty, and calculating. He was too sensitive and even ridiculous. Maybe, when she finally drove the dagger into his chest with her own hands, he would finally stop chasing and pestering her.
