Chapter 26
Their eyes locked, and Ellie’s face turned pale with anger, struggling to believe that Alex actually called her hypocritical
Tears welled up in her eyes, but her voice was unwavering “I don’t need it she said.
Ellie put down her bag and started tidying up the ward. She decided to swallow everything for the chance to be promoted.
Alex stared at Ellie, noticing her pained and frustrated expression. He glanced down at the pink diamond necklace in his hands, breaking the silence that filled the room
“Help me up! I need to go to the bathroom!” he snapped from behind her. Ellie ignored him. His head was injured, not his legs–he could’ve been up and about since morning.
“Did you hear me. Ellie?” Alex grumbled, throwing something at her. She rolled her eyes and stepped into the caregiver’s area.
After making the bed, she stepped out again, only to find Alex blocking the doorway, peeling an orange and glaring at her. “Did that idiot Aaron say anything to you?” he asked.
Ellie pon
pouted and bravely shot back, “At least Aaron’s better than you”
He threw a half peeled orange at her, along with the peel.
Ellie picked up the dripping orange from the floor and tossed it in the trash can.
“That day in your apartment, Aaron started the fight. Why don’t you go yell at him instead?” Alex moved aside to let her pass, but he bent down to grab another orange and lay back in bed, carelessly tossing the orange peel her way
Ellie didn’t wa
want to argue, so she pretended not to hear him,
“Talk to me, Ellie!” Alex snapped, his frustration boiling over. He hurled the orange at the ceiling, creating a loud thud as it landed back on the bed. Ellie stared at a stain on the ceiling, walked over, and tossed the orange in the trash. Just as she turned to leave, Alex grabbed her wrist.
She looked down at his hand gripping her wrist. “You’re not wrong; the ceiling started the fight first,” she smirked.
Alex was taken aback.
Ellie wrenched her wrist free, grabbed a tissue, and wiped the orange juice stain off the blankes, So continued their silent standoff–Ellie ignoring him, and Alex sulking.
She originally thought a single night of caregiving would be all, but Nancy didn’t come to the hospital for two or three days.
Not only did Ellie have to treat Alex, but she also had to keep him company and manage his meals. On top of that, Alex kept purposely making things difficult for her, leaving her exhausted and overwhelmed.
Every time she wanted to just walk away, she remembered the director’s promise to consider her for a permanent position. She gritted her teeth and endured everything.

Alex lay there scrolling through his phone, not hothering to look at her. “I’m dizzy. I can’t sit.”
Frustrated, Ellie had to shift him to an emergency bed. As they wheeled him towards the imaging room, Alex kicked at her arm. “Push my pillow up higher.”

In the corridor, Alex sat in a patient gown, sulking on the gurney, glaring at Ellie, who was wearing a white lab coat and trying to keep composure as their gazes locked.
Every now and then, patients and nurses strolled by, unable to resist stealing glances at them. Clearly, their silent communication had transcended than of a typical doctor and patient, and whispers began to circulate.
“What’s up with those two? Are the doctor and the patient a couple?”
Chapter 26
“I heard they’re dating. The girl’s a doctor in our department, and her boyfriend is some rich guy”
“That makes sense. He looks handsome but seems like trouble.”
“For sure. There’s probably some domestic violence lurking beneath the surface.”
Alex was left on the gurney, and after waiting for what felt like an eternity without Ellie making a move, he finally snapped, “Are you gonna come over here or what?
The onlookers couldn’t take it anymore.
“Dude, treat your girlfriend better!”
“Seriously, can’t you see she’s almost in tears?”
Fuming. Alex gritted lus teeth. “She’s not my girlfriend”
Suddenly, a guy in a patient gown pushed through the crowd. “You two will get along. Catch her!”
Before the words could even settle, the guy shoved Ellic forward. With a yelp, she lost her balance and fell straight into Alex’s arms
