Realizing what he was implying, she replied in a daze, "Then why bother starting over with me?"

"I don't have anyone I like at the moment. I may never fall in love again. It doesn't matter who is my wife at the moment, so instead of divorcing you, working on our marriage seemed like the optimum choice.
