Before the villager could say another word, Pan Meijia left without giving them another glance. While she hated people harming her friends and family, she would never laugh over another person’s pain. She looked down on those who did that.
Twenty minutes later, she arrived at the Lu family’s house. Mother Lu was watering the vegetables in the yard when she saw her muttering to herself.
"Meijia, what are you doing talking to yourself?" she asked.
Hearing her words, Pan Meijia pushed the gate open and entered the yard while saying, "Aunt Lu, it’s nothing."
Mother Lu noticed her emotions but didn’t pry further. She put down the water dipper and asked, "Meijia, your eldest sister-in-law just gave birth, yet you run over to my place. Did something happen at home?"
Pan Meijia shook her head and replied, "My eldest sister-in-law’s mother is taking care of her and the newborn baby. Even if I go there, I can’t help with anything. So, I came to visit you since I have nothing to do at home."
After she said this, she placed the bamboo basket down and added, "Aunt Lu, my husband hunted some wild animals in the mountains. We couldn’t finish them, so he asked me to bring some over for you and Uncle Lu."
Mother Lu already treated Pan Meijia as her own daughter, so she didn’t refuse their good intentions and said, "Help me thank your husband."
Pan Meijia nodded and said, "Aunt Lu, I also brought some brown sugar, some eggs, and two fish for the second sister-in-law. Having twins is tiring, and her milk might not be enough. My mother said that drinking more fish soup can help increase the milk."
"Your mother is right. Ah Cheng went to fish yesterday but only managed to get two small fish, which was not enough at all. Fortunately, you sent two big fish over. Now, I don’t have to worry about the soup anymore," Mother Lu said with a smile.
Pan Meijia felt comfortable when she heard her words. She liked how the Lu family treated her casually. It made her feel as if she were part of the family.
"Aunt Lu, if you need anything, just let me know. My husband is a rough man, and he often goes to the mountains. I can ask him to catch more fish for you," she offered.
"Then I won’t refuse your offer," Mother Lu said.
After she put the fish into a jar with water, she took out a jar from the kitchen and said, "Your husband likes to eat sauerkraut. I made some yesterday, take it back. After two weeks, it will be ready. With the cold weather, it can be stored longer and won’t be as sour as during summer."
Looking at the sealed jar, Pan Meijia’s eyes lit up. While she liked pickled vegetables made by her third sister-in-law, her husband liked sauerkraut made by Mother Lu.
So, when she heard this, she accepted the jar and said, "Thank you, Aunt Lu!"
Seeing how happy she was, Mother Lu smiled and added, "When you almost finish the sauerkraut, just tell me. I will make more for you and your husband."
"Okay!"
