Chapter 107

Gers

Ashton didn’t say a word during our drive to the Mercer estate. I glanced at him, thinking he might be

nervous

When we get there, you just need to greet them. I’ll handle any questions that come our way,I reassured him

Okay,he replied simply

If Logan is there and he says something mean or tries to make things difficult for you, don’t hold back,” I added firmly

Okay,he said again, his tone calm

Oh, right. We need to get our story straight,I said, remembering the details we’d need to sell this charade. Let’s say we met in Amaty, and youwell, you liked me so much that you followed me here.

I trailed off, feeling too shy to finish the sentence

Ashton didn’t miss a beat. I probably won’t mess that up,he said

Huh?I turned to him, confused, but understanding dawned on me quickly

He didn’t elaborate, and I didn’t know how to respond, so I stayed quiet. The silence between us grew, making the atmosphere slightly awkward

The awkwardness made me a bit nervous, and my hands gripped the steering wheel tighter. Suddenly, the car in front of us slammed on its brakes, forcing me to react

I barely had time to process what was happening when Ashton’s hand shot out like lightning. He grabbed the steering wheel and turned it sharply. The car veered 45 degrees, skidding slightly but avoiding a collision

When the car screeched to a halt, I sat frozen in shock. Ashton’s reflexes were unrealalmost superhuman

Focus on driving,he said, his voice steady but filled with concern. It’s fine if the car gets damaged, but what if you get hurt?”

I watched as he straightened out the car once the vehicle in front of us started moving again

In that moment, my three years of driving experience felt laughable compared to the control and skill Ashton had just displayed

It took me a while to recover from the shock, but as I drove on, I couldn’t help but ask, Your driving skills are unbelievable. Were you a driver in the army?”

No,he replied, his tone neutral

I glanced at him briefly. Then what kind of soldier were you?”

Special forces,he said simply

I didn’t know much about the military, but I’d seen enough on television to know that special forces were the elitethe best of the best. They were the ones on the front lines, handling the toughest missions

Ashton really was incredible. There was a toughness about him, a quiet strength that wasn’t common
