Even if Ashton was fine with the idea of being ‘my man‘, he should have at least refused to borrow money. Yet, he showed no intention of doing so.
my
It became clear to me that he must really need the money and desperately wanted to cure his sister. The thought made me sympathize with him–this man who had always seemed so tough and strong now appeared vulnerable.
The pang of sympathy unsettled me. I cleared my throat lightly and said, “Have you taken your sister to a doctor? Give me a copy of her medical records. I can ask someone to take a look.”
“Okay,” Ashton agreed again without hesitation.
I stood up, sensing there was nothing more to say. “Thank you for today. I’ll get going.”
He looked at me and said, “Call me if you feel unwell.”
“Sure.” I forced a smile, relieved to finally leave.
For some reason, being cared for felt surprisingly stressful.
When I got home, I leaned against the door, trying to steady my breathing and emotions. Just then, my phone started ringing.
I walked into my room to grab it, only to see it was Logan calling.
The sight of his name on the screen filled me with disgust. I hesitated but ultimately ignored the call.
When the ringing stopped, I noticed there were more than twenty missed calls–most from Logan, and
a few from Victor.
It wasn’t hard to guess that Victor had been calling on Logan’s behalf.
Logan must have something urgent to say, given how persistent he was. When he called again, I finally picked up.
“Hello?”
“Elaine, where are you? I miss you.” Logan’s voice was slurred, and I could tell he was drunk.
I stayed silent.
He let out a bitter chuckle. “Right, you’ve dumped me.”
I remained quiet.
Logan called out my name softly, almost pleadingly. “Elaine, are you sure about this? We’ve been together for ten years. You’ve always loved me…”
So Logan ‘knew‘. He had always known. He had taken advantage of my feelings for him all this time,
hadn’t he?
“Elaine, say something. Tell me–is it really over between us? Can’t we get back together?” His voice cracked, and I heard the sound of something shattering in the background.
It was clear he was drunk out of his mind. I didn’t want to hear any more of his nonsense.
“Logan, I’m hanging up.”

“Don’t!” he cried, stopping me. “Elaine, will you feel hurt if I end up with Selene?”
