Logan saw the picture. He saw the ring. 

Yet his eyes only stayed wide for one minute, before he pointed at his office. “Now.” His voice was firm, no room for argument or doubt. 

Why did he sound angry? Was he disappointed to learn that I was actually his wife? 

Sensing a scolding in my future, I rose from my chair and slunk into his office. He followed me, then closed the door behind me. He held out his hand for the photo and the ring. I gave him the photo, but wasn’t as eager to pass over the ring, especially after all I had done to reclaim it. 

He eyed me with suspicion, but did not press me to hand it over. Not yet, anyway. I sensed that would come at some point, though.

“I was looking for this,” he said, waving the photo. He placed it on his desk. “Explain to me while you it from my desk.” 1 

I opened my mouth to speak, but he interrupted me. 

“Make it a very good reason, Hazel. Because you were the last person I suspected of such a thing, when maybe you should have been the first. I never expected you to be a snoop and a thief.” 

“It’s not like that,” I said. 

“Did you or did you not steal that photo out of my desk?” 

“I mean…. I did…” 

“Logan gave me a pointed look. 

“But it was for a good reason,” I added quickly. 

Logan crossed his arms. “Which is?” 

I held up the ring. “This. It’s the same, isn’t it?” 

Logan glanced at it. “You know it is. What happened? Did you steal that from your treacherous sister? Guess that runs in the family, since whoever she stole it from is my wife.” 

My heart pounded hard in my chest. My fingers trembled, holding the ring. I swallowed down my rising 

nerves. 

This was 

s my moment. I had to make him see. I could only hope he would react with relief and not disappointment. So often, I had watched the men I’d grown to care about look at me with distain, the love draining from their eyes like it had never been there at all. 

Even before, Logan had immediately wanted my sister. He had never considered that his wife could be me, not even after he knew the truth of my family. 

But now. It was time he knew. 

“She stole it from me,” I said. 

For a long moment, he didn’t react. He was frozen, like the clock had stopped. Then, slowly, he blinked as

I didn’t like that look on his face. I dropped my gaze down to the carpeted floor, unwilling to see the scom I was sure would follow. 

“I went on a trip to Vegas, where I thought my boyfriend would propose. When he proposed to my sister Instead, I fled…” 

Logan already knew all of this, but it felt appropriate setup for the part that came next. 

“The rest of the night was a blur, but I woke up the next morning in an unfamiliar hotel room… with this ring on my finger.” 

“You… what?” Logan’s voice was barely a whisper, strained, 

Keeping my eyes on the ground, I continued, “I thought it was fake. I thought I’d just had a one night stand. I rushed home, only to then be told to pick up Natalie from the airport. It was then she stole the ring from me. I didn’t know it was real, or what it meant. It was only later I found out I was married.” “I don’t understand…”

Tears began to well in the corners of my eyes. I wouldn’t be able to handle his rejection. I’d have to ask for a transfer to some other position in the company. Would they give it to me? Would I be able to make ends meet? 

None of that felt as important to me right now as the crunch and crash of my heart shattering within my chest. 

I looked up at him. With the tears in my eyes, the vision of him was blurry, I couldn’t clearly make out his face. 

“Logan, I think I’m your wife.” 

The world went still again. Logan didn’t even seem like he was breathing. 

I blinked, and the tears rolled down my cheeks in fat, wet blobs.. 

With cleared vision, I could see Logan again at last. The look on his face was not one of distain, or resentment, or hatred, or disgust, or anything else that my self–loathing had taught me to expect. 

Instead, he seemed… hopeful. With his eyes wide and bright, his face clear, the edge of his lips curved slightly upward in an almost smile. 

“It’s you,” he said, voice a breath. 

Stepping closer, he reached up and gently pried the ring from my hand. Before my heart could sink, he clasped my left hand in his and slid the ring onto my ring finger. 

“How could I not have known?” he asked. “All this time, you were right in front of me.” 

I sniffled some and wiped at my tears with my free hand. “I had no clu
