The physicians who came to treat Randall and Zea all left covering their noses.
Combined with the recent incident involving Cyril, rumors about their family had spread all over the capital.
However, Randall and Zea were too exhausted to care anymore. They knew these rumors wouldn't be kind.
After finally regaining some strength today, Zea, supported by servants, went to see Randall.
He was lying on the bed, his face ashen, utterly drained.
"Randall, I think we've been poisoned. Someone's targeting us, trying to make our lives worse than death. I suspect it's Manfred—he must resent you and me deeply. Too many strange things have been happening in this house lately, and I'm sure he's behind it.
"The priest told me that the troubles in our home aren't caused by ghosts—ghosts couldn't possibly do all this. It must be a person," Zea said, having been brooding over the matter since recovering some strength.
Randall waved his hand weakly. "Don't bring up Manfred again."
"Should we send Manfred away? He's far too unsettling. Perhaps he's incompatible with us. He's grown up now, and he must have all sorts of rebellious thoughts.
"Even though he's your only son now, I can still have another child. As for Cyril, he can adopt a child in the future," Zea proposed.
Randall frowned. "Incompatible? What else could he possibly do to us? He's my son. What could he do to me? You're also his nominal mother—his aunt.
"Even if we've mistreated him over the years, he has no right to hold a grudge. With Cyril incapacitated, Manfred is our only choice to represent the family. Everyone must see that we still have an heir."
Zea was stunned. "You want to present him to the public? How... How could you do this? What about Cyril? We still haven't found the culprit who harmed him. What if it was Manfred?"
She didn't expect Randall to place renewed hopes on Manfred, much less so quickly.
"There's no proof it was him. Cyril's arrogant nature makes it easy for him to make enemies. Perhaps someone hired an assassin to harm him. This matter is already embarrassing enough—don't speak of it again!
"I'm unwell and tired. Go back to your quarters," Randall said, effectively dismissing her.
If he were in better health, he might have had the patience to indulge in tender conversations with her. But now, he had neither the time nor the energy.

More chapters please...
Is the author going to finally portray Skylark as a brave woman who can argue and communicate like a normal person in this real world? Hoping so.......
I don't like this story portraying Skylark's personality as too weak, too naive, Can't even defend herself Like accepting every humiliation from Vera's schemes and injustice without saying anything or doing anything. I wonder who is the protagonist in this novel, Vera or Skylark....
