How dare a beggar act like she was so important?
She even gave her name and demanded to see Manfred. As if a beggar's name mattered! Why would Manfred ever waste his time meeting a beggar?
Vivian frowned and glanced behind Mabel, her gaze sweeping over the tightly shut gates.
Several guards stood watching over the entrance, making it impossible to enter without a struggle. And right now, she was stuck outside.
Seeing that Vivian still hadn't moved, Mabel grew furious. "Why are you still here? Do you not understand what I'm saying? Mr. Atkinson really doesn't have time to see you. If I were you, I'd leave immediately."
She didn't know why, but she had a gut feeling that this beggar was a threat to her. The thought was ridiculous, of course.
How could she possibly compare to her?
Vivian said nothing. Instead, she simply turned and walked to the side.
The government office entrance was the safest place—there was no need to worry about danger there.
Since they wouldn't let her in to see Manfred, she would just wait at the door. She refused to believe that Manfred would stay inside forever.
Mabel let out a cold laugh.
After watching Vivian walk away, she turned to the guards.
"Briarpatch is not like Vlario. It's much more chaotic here and now is an especially dangerous time. Mr. Atkinson is swamped with official duties. You must guard this gate well—don't let any random people inside to disturb him."
One of the guards immediately replied, "Don't worry, Ms. Lynch. Kemp has already warned us—we won't let anyone in to trouble Mr. Atkinson."
Mabel nodded in satisfaction. "Good, I appreciate your hard work."
"It's no trouble at all!"
With that, Mabel boarded her carriage and set off.
However, the carriage had only traveled a short distance before stopping again.
She lifted the curtain and glanced toward Vivian, who stood not far away. "You don't have family, do you?"
"How about this—I'll give you a chance. Come serve as my maid. I can guarantee you'll never have to worry about food or shelter again. You won't have to live as a beggar anymore."
Vivian looked up at Mabel, her face expressionless. There was no sign of excitement or gratitude in her bright, clear eyes.

Is the author going to finally portray Skylark as a brave woman who can argue and communicate like a normal person in this real world? Hoping so.......
I don't like this story portraying Skylark's personality as too weak, too naive, Can't even defend herself Like accepting every humiliation from Vera's schemes and injustice without saying anything or doing anything. I wonder who is the protagonist in this novel, Vera or Skylark....
