Chapter 910
After a brief wait, Joe, Skylar, Vera, and Justin were shown to their seats. Once settled, Vera picked up the menu and started ordering.
“I’ve ordered a few of the house specialties. Let me know if you want anything else,” she said.
Vera was always surrounded by friends who catered to her
wherever she went. She was used to being the one to decide what to eat as if everything naturally revolved around her.
Joe handed Skylar the menu. “Take a look and see if you’d like
anything.”
At that, Vera’s arrogance waned slightly with a hint of reluctance in her gaze.
Justin, observing from the side, sighed inwardly. Men often
understood each other in ways others didn’t. It was clear that Joe likely considered Vera less important now.
“How about these two?” Skylar chose one main course and one dish from the ala carte menu.
Joe added another dish. The food was all vegetarian options, and they arrived promptly, as did the tea.
Skylar found the light vegetarian dishes refreshing after recently indulging in heavier meals. She enjoyed the simplicity of the
flavors and ate quietly.
Meanwhile, Vera and Justin made small talk with Joe, though Justin was more skilled at keeping the conversation light and pleasant.
Despite Joe’s reserve and Skylar’s silence, the atmosphere at the table seemed comfortable enough,

“Ms. Sullivan, do you actually enjoy vegetarian food?” Vera asked, noticing that Skylar was eating continuously.
Skylar had intended to enjoy the meal quietly, then take her time descending the hill, soaking in the views she’d missed earlier. But Vera clearly had other plans, unwilling to let the meal pass peacefully.
Looking up from her plate, Skylar replied coolly, “Yes, it tastes good.
“I’m not used to it. Looks like the online reviews were a bit misleading. Joe, how about we go for steak after we head down the hill? I noticed you haven’t eaten much either,” Vera suggested, turning to Joe.
Skylar and Joe’s differing tastes hinted at the potential fragility of their relationship. She could sense that Joe wasn’t particularly fond of vegetarian dishes, just like she was. The strong flavors of some of the organic vegetables made the meal less appealing for
Vera.
Justin, being perceptive, chose to stay silent at this moment. If Joe agreed to steak, he could easily excuse himself once they arrived at the hill’s base. But while he could make an excuse to leave, Skylar…
“Skylar and I have other plans. Maybe another time,” Joe replied.
Vera gripped her utensils tighter, frustrated by Joe’s indifference. She had gone out of her way to invite him, and he had the nerve to

Is the author going to finally portray Skylark as a brave woman who can argue and communicate like a normal person in this real world? Hoping so.......
I don't like this story portraying Skylark's personality as too weak, too naive, Can't even defend herself Like accepting every humiliation from Vera's schemes and injustice without saying anything or doing anything. I wonder who is the protagonist in this novel, Vera or Skylark....
