Chapter 110
Esther walked mechanically to the shower head in the bathroom, letting cold water pour down from above. She repeatedly applied shower gel to her body and vigorously rubbed every inch of her skin. She knew very well that the woman in the video was not her, but for everyone else,
the woman in the video was her.
Esther felt as if her body had been smeared with eternal, irreparable filth. She squatted under the shower, scrubbing with all her might, as if only by doing so could she make her body clean and pure.
Bradley heard the rushing sound of water from the bathroom and walked to the door with some concern, intending to knock, but he silently withdrew his hand.
Half an hour passed.
The sound of water continued running inside the bathroom.
Bradley lightly knocked on the door and called her name, “Esther.”
No response came from the bathroom.
Bradley knocked forcefully several times on the glass door of the bathroom.
“Esther?”
Still, there was no answer.
Without reason, Bradley began to panic. He twisted the doorknob and opened the bathroom’s glass door, entering inside.
In that instant, Bradley saw everything in the bathroom.
Esther had fainted on the cold floor of the bathroom, and the water from the shower head continued to splash on her body.
He immediately reached out and turned off the shower.
Bradley saw the red marks that Esther had just scratched on her body as well as the old scars crisscrossing her fair skin. His heart twisted into a knot.
He tentatively extended his hand beneath Esther’s nose until he felt the warmth of her breath. Relieved, he reached for a towel from the towel rack and tightly wrapped Esther in it.
Bradley placed Esther on his own bed and urgently gave instructions. “Clark, call the doctor.”
Feeling worried and resentful at how Bradley tormented Esther, Clark followed his order and called for a doctor.
Clark was thorough and reliable in his work. Not only did he call for a doctor, but he also
arranged for a psychologist to come.
