Chapter 331
“The truth is, Mr. Felix isn’t in a vegetative state,” the doctor explained earnestly. “He woke up several times during his treatment, although the awakenings were brief. Due to his fever. and prolonged time in the sea, he developed pediatric pneumonia. We’re treating him, and we expect him to recover soon.”
Upon seeing Felix, Esther had already prepared herself for the worst. She had thought he was in a coma, but now that he wasn’t, what was there to fear? Moreover, finding him now was already a cause for joy and comfort.
“Thank you, doctor,” Esther said.
“It’s my duty,” the doctor replied gently.
With that, the doctor and the housekeeper quietly left Esther and Felix to reunite, exiting the
room.
Esther held Felix’s small hand inside the room and gently caressed his face, speaking softly.” Felix, it’s Mommy. Mommy has found you. You scared Mommy to death.”
Even though finding Felix was a happy occasion, tears continued to stream down Esther’s face. No, to be precise, they were tears of joy.
The housekeeper and the doctor listened to the sound of weeping coming from the room and exchanged silent glances before returning to their respective quarters,
Felix was well cared for by the housekeeper and others. His hair was clean, and there was no trace of any odor. His clothes were changed regularly, and a faint scent of disinfectant and fruits lingered in the air.
Esther lay beside him carefully, supporting her chin with one hand as she watched over him. She was hesitant to fall asleep, fearing that the boy before her would vanish if she did.
The soft lighting illuminated Felix’s fair face. Esther lightly patted him as she hummed a children’s song.
Unintentionally, her eyes grew heavy, and she fell asleep by Felix’s side. In truth, Esther had never had a restful night’s sleep since Felix’s accident. She was plagued by dreams of Felix calling out to her as he submerged in the cold seawater.
He would say, “Mommy, I’m cold.”
Nightmares continued to haunt her. Each time she woke from a nightmare, she had to confront the unpredictable Bradley. She was physically and mentally drained.
Now, seeing Felix alive and breathing right before her, she could finally let go of her guard. and peacefully drift off to sleep.
Esther’s death as an act of atonement exceeded Bradley’s expectations.
