Chapter 434
“I’m not mentally prepared yet. I don’t know how to face her,” Jacob replied.
Even though Jacob did not display his emotions, Esther could sense his unease. She tousled his hair, ruffling it into a messy tangle.
“Jacob, you’ve played your tricks on me, but I won’t hold it against you.” Esther suddenly shifted her tone to a more relaxed and energetic one. “Your mother’s flight won’t be long now. Shall we go pick her up together later?”
“I don’t want to go…”
Jacob was just a child. How could he not want to see his mother?
He wanted to he really wanted to see his mother.
When his mother, someone he had only known through documents, data, videos, and photos, was about to enter his real world, his initial reaction was unexpectedly the urge to escape.
“Are you really not going?” Esther earnestly brushed aside the disheveled strands from Jacob’s forehead. She smiled mischievously. “If you don’t go, then I’ll have to go alone to pick her up. You know, I’m quite famous because of this case. Who knows? Someone might want to get rid of me, so it’s quite dangerous for me to be alone…”
Jacob silently lowered his head for a moment before finally uttering, “Then… I’ll go.”
Esther grinned. “Jacob, did you know your mother and I are best friends? Where we come from, best friends like to arrange pretend marriages for their children. How about I arrange one for you?”
Jacob stayed silent.
Esther continued to jest. “I think Sunshine really likes you. Let’s pick Sunshine, shall we?”
Jacob was still quiet.
“You don’t want to?” Esther teased again. “Forget it if you’re not interested. Love marriages are mainstream these days. It’s not like I can whip up an arranged marriage now.”
Jacob did not say a word.
Sunshine and Felix were playing nearby. As soon as they saw Esther, they rushed toward her like a whirlwind.
“Mommy!” they called out.
Esther caught the two little human tornadoes, one on each side, and fiercely kissed them respectively. “Mommy missed you both so much!”
Felix, all adorable and cute, asked, “Mommy, where’s Pixie?”
Sunshine also looked around but did not see Pixie anywhere. “Mommy, is Pixie still in the hospital?”
Esther held Felix and Sunshine tightly in her arms, explaining gently, “No. Pixie is not my daughter.”
