My Love Until the Last Goodbye (Mary and Maximus) novel Chapter 1008

Once Diana and the kids disappeared from the room, the others continued with dinner. Maximus didn’t miss the opportunity to tell Laura and Lucius that he wanted to speak with them privately after they finished eating.

“Miss Hayward, would you be so kind as to accompany this poor old man for a drink?” Magnus said as he stood up.

“Oh! Of course!” Amanda replied, quickly picking up on the hint and getting up as well.

“So, tell me, how did a beautiful young woman like yourself decide to become a lawyer?” Magnus asked as they walked away.

Once only Laura, Lucius, Adele, and Maximus remained at the table, Laura stood up.

“I’m going to put Adele to bed—she’s already sleepy. I’ll meet you both in the study, I won’t take long,” she said, lifting Adele from her high chair.

The two men nodded, then stood up and headed to the study.

“How have you been feeling here, Lucius?” Maximus asked, genuinely curious. “I hope it’s been good. Your siblings are happy to have you around.”

“It’s been… okay. A little strange, though,” Lucius admitted. “Can I ask you something?” He hesitated, a bit embarrassed but curious.

“Of course. What is it?” Maximus asked as he took his last bites of food.

“You and Diana… since when?”

“Since when are we together?” Maximus helped him finish the question.

“Yeah…”

“Well… She only recently arrived in Valentia. It hasn’t been long, but your siblings adore her—just like you used to, if I remember correctly,” Maximus said, recalling the past.

“Diana is a good person, but… I just never imagined you and her…”

“It just happened. And honestly, I can say we’re taking things slow. Having your siblings accept her makes me happy—it makes them feel more secure, too.”

“I see… So, what did you want to talk to me and Laura about?” Lucius abruptly changed the subject.

“Dad! I’m back! Adele is already asleep,” Laura announced, interrupting Lucius’s questions.

“Alright, let’s go to the study. What I have to tell you needs to be said in private,” Maximus said as he stood up.

“Come in, sweetheart, close the door behind you.”

“Sit down—I need to talk to both of you. It’s… a complicated matter,” Maximus said as he walked over to his desk.
