The hardest part of all this was that she now had to talk to her father about her decision. She already knew he wouldn’t take it well, but he needed to understand—she didn’t want her daughter to go through what Paul was experiencing now.

With all the chaos of the wedding at her grandfather’s house, she knew everyone was exhausted and still asleep.

Making sure Adele was safe and tucked in, Laura left her room, unable to sleep any longer. She headed to the kitchen for a glass of water, knowing that if she had already agreed to meet Adrian today, then the conversation with her father had to happen first thing in the morning.

When she entered the kitchen, she found exactly the person she needed to talk to. Maximus was sitting there with a cup of coffee, lost in thought. It was obvious he hadn’t slept well, but he didn’t want to disturb Diana. His mind was elsewhere, likely on what came next now that Serenity’s wedding was over.

“Dad…” Laura’s voice pulled him from his thoughts.

“Laura, sweetheart… What’s wrong?”

“What are you doing up so early?”

“Oh, nothing, my girl… Just wanted a quiet moment to drink my coffee.”

“That’s a total lie, Dad. You love the chaos that Maurice, Ethan, and Paul create. You even enjoy it when Adele joins in.”

Maximus smiled. It was true. He loved the noise in the house. He didn’t mind the slammed doors from Maurice and Paul’s arguments, or Adele’s morning tantrums when she woke up cranky. Even when Ethan visited and ran around the house with Maurice, all that chaos that would drive anyone else insane—he actually enjoyed it.

“You caught me lying,” he admitted. “I was thinking about Paul and his father…”

“Same here.”

“Is that why you’re up so early after such a long night?”

“Yes… I was thinking about Adele and her father.”

Maximus turned to look at his daughter as she took a sip from his coffee cup.

“Laura?”

She glanced at him out of the corner of her eye and said, “Dad… we need to talk.”
