Lucius was sitting next to Serenity, who, for some reason even he didn't understand, was clinging to his hand so tightly that he could practically feel her contractions himself.
That morning, when he woke up, he never would've imagined he'd be living a moment like this—much less with her.
"Brayson! How much longer till we get to the hospital?! Oh my God! Damn it! It huuuurts!" Serenity screamed, trying her best to stay strong.
"I'm sorry, ma'am! I'm going as fast as I can! Looks like there's an accident ahead—traffic's crawling and we can't get off this highway."
"Damn it! Aaaahhh! It hurts…" Serenity groaned, still holding on tightly to Lucius's hand.
"Please… can you call my mom and put her on speaker?" Serenity asked, on the verge of tears.
"Yes, ma'am…" Brayson answered, worried, glancing in the rearview mirror at the girl clearly in pain.
"Serenity? Sweetie?" Valerie answered, playing with Alberto at the time.
"Mommy!" Serenity cried, panicked.
"Serenity? What's going on, sweetie? Talk to me!" Valerie shouted, instantly alarmed by her daughter's voice.
"The baby…! Mom, the baby's coming…! And we're stuck, we can't get to the hospital… Aaaahhh! Mommy, mommy! What do I do? Tell me!" Serenity pleaded, both scared and desperate.
"My baby! My sweetheart! Stay calm, honey! Try to breathe, I'm calling your father right now and we're coming to find you…" Valerie said, clearly shaken.
"Nooo! Mommy! I don't think we're gonna make it to the hospital… I think the baby's going to be born in the truck," Serenity said, the contractions now coming faster and harder.
"What?! No! Serenity! Hold on… If you want, I'll carry you to the hospital myself, but don't do what I think you're about to do…" Lucius said, both terrified and stunned.
"Lucius, shut up and help meeee…" Serenity yelled, commanding. "Help me, I… I need help with my clothes… I don't think I'll make it to the hospital, so just help meee…"
"Lucius? Sweetheart? What are you doing with Lucius?" Valerie asked, shocked.
"Mommy…! It hurts soooo much…! What should I do?" Serenity cried, needing comfort—even if it was from a distance.
"What? What do you want me to do?" Lucius asked, already resigning himself to what was about to happen.
"Lucius…! Help her lie down in the seat!" Valerie urged, full of anguish. "We're on our way now… Serenity, does Alden know yet?"
"Nooo! God! Mom! I feel like pushing…" Serenity said, now lying back in the seat.
Lucius was positioned near her legs, more nervous than ever and trying to mentally prepare for what was coming.
"Serenity, breathe, try to breathe… okay? Can you do that? Hold on until we get there!" Lucius begged.
"Aahhhh! It's coming…" Serenity yelled, pushing with all her strength. "Lucius, help meee…" she cried, squeezing his hand.
"What? How? How do I help you? Tell me! What do I do?" Lucius asked, panicked and scared.
"Aaaah! Mommy!" Serenity screamed at the top of her lungs.
"Serenity, my little girl…" Marcus's voice came through the speaker. "Sweetheart, stay strong, you can do this… we're here for you… push, baby, push… We're calling Alden so he can get back to you right away."
"Here it comes again…" Serenity said, her voice laced with fear.
