“I see the superficial wounds are healing very well. Now let’s take a look at the one on your wrist.” 

As the doctor examined Mary, she turned to the window to avoid looking directly at her husband. She thought, “What is he doing here? Why is he here? Now he cares about what happens to me? No, I don’t 

want him here.” 

“Mrs. Palmer, the deepest wound is healing well, too. You’ll be able to go home soon. The stitches are healing nicely. You’ve been here for many days, so I think in a couple of days, we could discharge you, as long as you take care of yourself and follow the instructions to the letter.” 

“Don’t worry, doctor. We’ll continue with the care exactly as you advise,” Maximus said in a serious tone. 

Mary turned to look at him and glared. “Did this man really think I would go back to the mansion with him? He was so wrong,” Emma had already been instructed by Catherine to remove Mary’s belongings from the mansion. The move would be completed by the time she was discharged from the hospital, and her things would be at Grandma’s house. 

“Good, I see your recovery is progressing as expected. As I said, we might discharge you in two days.” 

“Thank you, doctor,” Mary responded softly. 

“If there are no questions or anything else, I’ll take my leave. Please rest. Just because you woke up without problems doesn’t mean you’re fully recovered yet.” 

Maximus had sent his grandmother to rest, so only he and his wife remained in the room. Inside, he felt a ⚫ great deal of guilt for being there; he knew he was responsible for the situation. But outwardly, he showed 

no signs of being troubled. 

“How are you feeling?” 

“Fine, I guess. A little hungry,” she said, trying to stay calm as she looked out the window to avoid facing. him. 

Maximus, tired of standing near the door, stepped closer. But when he began to walk, she turned to him and said, “You don’t need to be here. I’m sure you have plenty of more urgent matters to attend to. Feel 

free to leave.” 

“Mary, if I leave, Grandma will come here. She’s tired, and you know her well. She wouldn’t leave you alone for a moment.” 

“Oh, so that’s it! Do whatever you want, then!” 

That response left him speechless. Maximus realized Mary had misunderstood him. He didn’t want to give further explanations and decided to go to the waiting room outside. Seeing him leave, Mary said, ” Maximus, I love you, but I won’t go back to you. Once I’m out of the hospital, I’m going to Grandma’s house, and I’ll start the divorce process. There’s no need for you to draft the agreement; I’ll do it myself. I won’t ask for anything but my freedom.”
