Maximus, feeling uncomfortable after seeing Peter and Mary together, decided it wasn’t the time or place to speak with her. Instead, he headed to Alexia’s room. 

“Alexia? Can I come in?” he asked, knocking lightly on the door. 

When he got no reply, he opened it to find Alexia sitting with her face buried in her hands, streaming down her cheeks.

“Maximus? What are you doing here? Go back to your ex–wife!” Alexia snapped, her tone dripping with fury. 

“What are you talking about?” Maximus asked, taken aback. 

“I saw you, Maximus. I saw you carrying your ex–wife. You go running to her–what about me? Aren’t I the mother of your child?” 

“You are, Alexia. But what does that have to do with anything?” 

“You haven’t even come to see me today. And when I went looking for you, what did I find? A loving scene between you and Mary. Why did you even bring me here?” 

“Alexia, I… I only helped her to the bench in the garden. Please, understand…” 

“Understand what? That you’re still chasing after your ex–wife? She’s with Peter now, Maximus! It’s like you’re looking for excuses to be around her. Meanwhile, you don’t even take care of us. You know what? I’m leaving.” 

“Alexia, please. Where are you going?” 

“I’m going back to Valeria. I don’t know why you brought me here. Yesterday I wasn’t feeling well, and you left me alone.” 

“Did you not see what happened? Please, try to put yourself in her shoes.” 

“Why should I? She took years from us! For years, I had to live with the title of mistress, and it seems like you’ve conveniently forgotten all about that.” 

Maximus had never told Alexia the truth about how things had ended between him and Mary. It had all been a horrible misunderstanding, but Alexia’s involvement in that situation was undeniable. He had avoided bringing it up for the sake of keeping the peace, especially now with the baby on the way. 

“Alexia, listen to me. Mary is pregnant with Peter’s child. Yesterday, she nearly lost the baby. Peter had to take her to the hospital. And today, it’s her grandfather’s funeral. Can’t you understand what she’s going through?” 

“I don’t care, Maximus! She separated us, and I’m the mother of your child. Yet you don’t even care for us the way you should,” Alexia spat, grabbing her suitcase and heading for the door. 

“Alexia, please… 

“I’ve already said–I’m leaving. If you don’t want this to end, you’ll come with me. Otherwise, I’ll know that woman is more important to you than our child and me.”

“Oh, but I will,” she said coldly, brushing past him and out of the room.

Maximus was frustrated by her complete lack of empathy for the situation. It didn’t surprise him- Alexia had always been like this. If something didn’t affect her directly, she rarely gave it more than a passing thought. 

As Alexia got into the car to head to the airport, she asked the driver to raise the privacy divider. Once alone, she pulled out her phone and made a call. 

‘Grandpa, if you’re serious about dealing with Mary, then do it–and do it now. If not, she’s going to find a way to take Maximus back.” 

“What do you mean, my dear?” 

“I argued with Maximus today. He carried her in his arms, and then he had the nerve to ask me to ⚫ empathize with her. Her grandfather’s death has nothing to do with me! Why should I care?”
