After dinner, Marcus and Valerie took Emma to a hotel where they had reserved a room for her. The house didn’t have furniture yet. Marcus was eager to go shopping with Valerie to furnish their new home. For that first night, though, they planned to sleep on the floor. Being in their new home, even without comforts, carried a special meaning for both of them. 

Later that night, Marcus ran his hand over his wife’s bare body as she slept deeply beside him. Lost in his thoughts, he eventually got up and headed to the garden. Sometimes, he enjoyed smoking a cigar, and tonight he couldn’t resist the temptation.

“Sir… you can’t keep going like this,” Frederick said as he entered Marcus’s study. 

“What is it, Frederick? What are you talking about?” Marcus replied, sitting behind his desk, a glass of cognac in hand. 

“This,” Frederick said, gesturing to the glass. “You can’t keep drowning your sorrows in alcohol and women.” 

“Frederick, you’ve been awfully observant lately. 

“It’s not that, sir. You know I’m happy to serve you. I can send as many women to your house as you want, but the why behind it is what worries me.” 

Marcus’s expression turned cold and serious. Frederick’s words had struck a nerve. 

“Since we returned from Valentia, you haven’t been the same. The operation was a success, yet you don’t seem happy about it. In all the years I’ve worked for you, I’ve never seen you like this. This past year, you’ve spent your time between alcohol and sex. But this isn’t helping you heal–it’s only hurting you more.” 

Frederick hesitated but pressed on. 

“Sex isn’t the issue. It’s the reason behind it. If you were in love with someone, I wouldn’t be worried. In fact, I’d be happy. I’d love to see this house filled with children. But that’s not the case, is it? Have you considered that this might be causing you more pain than relief?” 

Marcus felt a deep discomfort. It was as if Frederick could see straight through him. 

“Frederick, have they managed to locate Miss Preston?” Marcus asked, abruptly changing the subject. 

Frederick caught the hint and decided not to push further.. 

“No, sir. Unfortunately, we haven’t had any luck. It’s as if she vanished off the face of the earth.” 

“You know, Frederick, I worry about that girl. I was far too cruel to her when we last saw each other in Valentia. I didn’t weigh my words or actions. At the time, I was dealing with the Palmers fighting me over Peter’s remains, and I took my anger out on her. couldn’t understand why she was so desperate to leave Valentia.”

“Keep looking for her, Frederick. We need to find her. Peter’s daughter should have been born a few months after she arrived in Hesperia. I worry about how they’re doing.”
