Marcus exited the emergency area, accompanied by an officer. He wore an uncomfortable neck brace and was being escorted to a private office to give his statement. As someone of prominence, he was kept away from prying eyes and curious onlookers.
Walking alongside the officer, who barely came up to his shoulder, Marcus’s attention was suddenly drawn to a young woman pacing with a baby in her arms, trying to soothe its cries. For a moment, he thought the accident had affected his vision. He rubbed his eyes, but when he opened them again, the woman was still there.
Marcus froze. It couldn’t be.
He watched as a nurse approached the woman, gesturing for her to follow her into an exam room.
“Mr. Bartz, I apologize that our facilities aren’t more accommodating,” the officer said, breaking Marcus’s train of thought.
“It’s fi
fine, officer,” Marcus replied, though his voice sounded distant. “But I do have a special request.”
“Of course. What is it?”
“On our way here, I saw a woman in the reception area holding a baby. I couldn’t speak to her because of the glass divider. Can you find out where she is?”
“Excuse me?”
Marcus wasn’t sure if he was imagining things, but he couldn’t shake the possibility. For two years, he had been searching for Mary and her daughter. Despite his best efforts, she had disappeared without a trace. But now, when he was at his most vulnerable, could it be that fate had orchestrated this accident to reunite them?
“Please find her. And whatever she needs, make sure she’s taken care of. I’ll cover the expenses. Just don’t let her leave,” Marcus said, wincing as the neck trace restricted his movements. He felt like a dog wearing the cone of shame.
[Inside the exam room, little Serenity had finally fallen asleep. Her cheeks were flushed a deep red, and
her tiny body was drenched with sweat from the fever
“Ma’am, please walt here. A pediatrician will see your baby shortly,” the nurse said before stepping out.
Walking down the hallway, the nurse, Carmen, felt a hand on her shoulder. She turned to see the police officer.
“Carmen,” the officer began.
“What is it, Mark?” she asked, mildly annoyed.
“Earlier, in reception, there was a woman holding a baby. Our ‘special patient,‘ Mr. Bartz, wants to know where she is. He says to make sure she’s attended to–he’ll cover all the costs–but she can’t leave.”
“Ugh, these rich men! They think they own the world was about to turn her away because of the doctor

shortage, and now he wants to foot her bill?” Carmen huffed.
on, Carmen. Where is she?”
“She’s in Dr. Ferdinand’s office. The baby has a fever.”
“Thanks! Oh, and don’t let her leave. Mr. Bartz wants to speak to her. Do you know her name?”
“Why do you need her name?”
“To tell him.‘

“Let him ask her himself! What’s next? He’s into single moms now?” Carmen quipped, suspecting that Marcus was interested in the woman.
“Don’t jump to conclusions. Maybe he knows her.”
“I doubt it. She looked worried and was alone. If she had connections with someone as wealthy as him, do you think she’d be here at this hour, by herself?”
“Fair point. But it’s not our place to speculate.”
In the office, Marcus gave his statement about the accident. The young men who had crashed into his car were sons of a wealthy businessman. They had been street racing and hadn’t expected to collide with someone. Covering the damages wouldn’t be an issue.
“Officer, I’ll have my lawyer handle the rest. I’m exhausted and would like to check on my friend. I heard he was moved to a private room. If there’s nothing else to sign, I’d like to leave now.”
“No, Mr. Bartz. We’ll be in touch with your lawyer if we need anything further.”
“Thank you.” Marcus quickly left the office, scanning the hallway for the officer he had sent to find the woman. He spotted him chatting with the nurse.
Carmen’s expression shifted as Marcus approached. She raised an eyebrow to signal her colleague that someone was behind him. The officer turned and saw Marcus standing there.
