Chapter 0194
The private jet carrying Marcus Bartz landed in Hesperia at 4:00 p.m., a full four hours ahead of Mary’s flight. Marcus had been enduring an intense pain in his leg almost since leaving Coravela, but he hadn’t mentioned it to Frederick because of the circumstances. When he stood up, a burning sensation shot through his leg. He tried to move, but it didn’t respond, causing him to collapse to the floor. Frederick panicked.
“Man, I can’t stand up,” Marcus said as Frederick rushed to help him.
“Come on, you’ve got this! Let’s get off the plane and head to the hospital!
Marcus tried leaning on his uninjured leg, but his body wasn’t cooperating. Alarmed, Frederick called for the captain’s help, who notified airport authorities. An ambulance was dispatched immediately.
When the paramedics examined Marcus, they noticed severe bruising on his leg. Though they couldn’t be certain, they suspected either a muscle tear or a ruptured tendon. Left with no choice, Frederick called Dr. Olsen and asked her to fly urgently to Hesperia to assess the injury and, if necessary, perform the surgery that had been postponed time and again for various reasons.
Frederick understood that Marcus’s biggest worry was Mary slipping away and becoming impossible to find, but right now, his boss and friend’s health was the priority. There was no time to track her down they didn’t even have a photo to give the bodyguards. How are we supposed to find her?‘ he thought.
After more than three hours, Dr. Olsen arrived at one of the hospitals Marcus frequently used. The prognosis for his injured leg was uncertain, but she decided immediate surgery was necessary. There was no time to waste. Years of effort couldn’t be thrown away in a split second. It was a risky decision, but Frederick agreed and prayed to every saint he could think of to help his grumpy friend.
The urgency of Marcus’s condition meant they lost track of Mary’s arrival. For now, Marcus was Frederick’s sole focus. He was only about 15 years older than Marcus, but he felt like he was taking care
of a son.
Frederick’s demanding job had prevented him from ever having a family of his own. After what happened to the Bartz family, he was terrified of involving anyone else who could later become a target in Marcus’s pursuit of revenge. He didn’t want to carry the weight of knowing his loved ones could be used as leverage someday.
With that in mind, he never sought a partner. As a man, he’d occasionally satisfy his physical needs, but always without strings attached. His entire life revolved around Marcus, and Marcus only had him.
After a grueling five–hour surgery, Dr. Olsen emerged with news. It seemed Frederick’s prayers had been answered. Despite the long road of therapy and rehabilitation ahead, the operation was a success. Once Marcus recovered and completed rehab, he would regain full mobility in his leg, just like the old days.
A couple of hours later, Marcus was moved to his room. For the surgery, they had to trim his beard for hygiene purposes, which felt odd but was a standard procedure. After years, Frederick could finally see his friend’s face. Without the beard, Marcus didn’t look as old as he liked to appear. Even though his face. was pale and gaunt, it still radiated youth and beauty. He had undoubtedly inherited his mother’s features.

Frederick stayed by Marcus’s side as he woke up, still dinging to the hope of finding the girl. He had sent the guards to search for her, but although they’d been close, they lost track of her when she went to grab a coffee. The only clue they had was her bag, embroidered with butterflies. Then, just like that, she vanished.
Lost in thought about how to find her, Frederick closed his eyes for a moment. He was snapped out of it by the soft voice of Dr. Olsen.
“May I come in?”
“Dr. Olsen… Of course! Please, come in,” Frederick said, shaking off his brief nap.
