Chapter 0199
Mary sat on a bench, lost in thought about where she would spend the night. The hotel she’d stayed in for one night had been fine, but it wasn’t a long–term solution. Besides, she didn’t know if anyone might be following her. The best option was to erase all traces of her presence. She decided the name Angela” was no longer safe to use, and neither was “Mary.” From now on, she would be Valerie. She didn’t have any papers, but she also didn’t have anyone left to remember her. The priority now was to find a place to sleep and register under a different name.
Her stomach growled, reminding her she hadn’t eaten anything since the morning
“Serene, forgive me! I promise we’ll find something delicious to eat soon. I’m such a bad mother!” she said, gently rubbing her belly.
Wandering the nearby streets, she found a modest hotel with affordable rooms. It was something she could manage for now. After spending most of the day at the cemetery, she also realized she needed a change of clothes–something she hadn’t accounted for. She paid for a week’s stay and, once settled, went back outside. The smell of fresh bread drew her in, and she bought a roll, eating it as she walked.
She stopped by a clothing store, one of the well–known chains where people could pay in installments. But without proper ID, she couldn’t apply for a card. Besides, she didn’t want to accrue debt she couldn’t repay. She bought a notebook instead and began jotting down her expenses to keep track of every penny.
Over the next week, Mary knew she had to find work. The hotel gave her a little breathing room, but she couldn’t afford to live there long. She needed to find a small apartment or a room–anything cheaper than staying in hotels. Otherwise, her savings would vanish, and she wouldn’t even have enough to eat.
Her married life had taught her the value of hard work She knew how to clean, care for plants, and cook like a pro. She felt confident these skills would help her find a job. Optimistic, she focused on keeping her mind occupied, avoiding the painful memories of her past.
A few kilometers away, Marcus lay restless in his hospital bed. He was stubborn, insisting he wanted to get up, but if he tried, it would undo all of Dr. Olsen’s work. Recovery would be slow and painful, followed by months of rehabilitation. Yet Marcus’s unease wasn’t just physical. The more time passed, the slimmer the chances of finding Mary. The guilt from how he had spoken to her back in Valentia weighed heavily on him.
“Frederick, I feel fine. I want to go home!” Marcus sale firmly.
“I’m sorry, my friend, but if we want this to work, you can’t move yet. You must stay in bed. And if I have to tie you down to keep you here, I will. I’ve already sent people to search for Miss Mary. Relax. As soon as we find her, I’ll bring her here so you can see she’s okay.”
“Damn the moment I got hurt!” Marcus growled, his frustration boiling over.
“Don’t blame yourself. You held out for a long time. It could’ve been much worse, but it wasn’t,” Frederick said calmly. “We’ll find her soon. And before you know it, you’ll be back on your feet without my help–or that cursed cane, as you call it.”
Marcus’s expression darkened with guilt. “I feel like Iailed Peter. I should’ve taken better care of his
