Chapter 0213
[Present day]
Frederick noticed that his friend and boss, Marcus, was smiling as they drove to pick up Serenity. He considered. Ignoring it but decided it was better to clarify the reason behind that grin. With Marcus, you could never be too sure–it could just as easily be about his family as about plotting Palmer’s downfall
“I see something amused you,” Frederick said nervously.
“You mentioned earlier when Valerie got mad at me. I’ve tried to forget that embarrassing incident, but today I remembered exactly what happened. Do you remember it? Marcus asked, his tone casual.
“How could I forget? You were a wreck, not thinking straight,” Frederick replied, feeling relieved it wasn’t anything serious.
Marcus turned and gave him a cold glare.
“That’s not funny! I was going through a rough time then. For a moment, I thought everything was over before it
even started.”
“In the end, you got your act together and spoke from the heart. And now, look–you’ve been married for 15 years.
[The past, Hesperia]
The weekend at the estate in Marivale was wonderful. Marcus had upgraded their accommodations to a luxurious bungalow with two bedrooms, a kitchen, a bathroom, and a living/dining area–ensuring the three of them could enjoy the weekend comfortably. Serenity, though still young, felt like she was living a dream. Her dad and mom were both there with her, and she couldn’t ask for anything more. She noticed little details she’d never seen before, her happiness radiating from every smile.
Occasionally, Marcus would hold Valerie’s hand, and Serenity even caught him kissing her mom twice and hugging her another time. She’d seen parents at the park de things like that, and it made her happy. Her parents had never done those things before, so this felt special.
The two days flew by, and on Sunday night, they returned to Valerie’s house. Marcus carried a sleepy Serenity in his arms, tucked her into her bed, covered her with a blanket, and kissed her forehead before leaving the room. Valerie was sitting with Camille in the living room when Marcus came out. Camille immediately recognized that her presence was no longer needed and headed to the kitchen under the pretense of getting water.
Valerie stood up to walk Marcus to the door. As they moved through the hallway, Marcus wrestled with the urge to ask her to spend the night with him, but he dismissed the idea. It would be presumptuous, and besides who would watch Serenity? Camille had already been more than accommodating.
At the door, he let go of the thought entirely. Instead, he gently took her by the waist and kissed her before she had a chance to react.
“See you tomorrow. Think about what I said,” he whispered as he stepped out the door.
Marcus left her dazed and flustered. She hadn’t expected that goodbye kiss, and now she had a lot to think about. The weekend had been perfect, almost like they were truly a family. And maybe, just maybe, that wasn’t such a bad thing–especially when she saw how happy Serenity was.
Marcus drove home to his house in La Condesa, took a shower, and lay in bed reflecting on the weekend. This is what it must feel like to have a family. For so long, his focus had been on meeting his own needs, but ever since

reconnecting with Valerie and meeting Serenity, things had changed. The little girl had become a priority, and now, after taking a step forward with Valerie, both of them were his priorities. The weekend had left him feeling more fulfilled than he’d thought possible.
Meanwhile, Camille noticed Valerie’s distracted state and approached her.
“Sweetheart, is everything okay? You’ve seemed out of it since Saturday morning. Did something happen?” she asked, suspecting something had occurred with Marcus.
“No, Camille! Nothing’s wrong.”
