Chapter 0235
Alexia sat in the master bedroom, going through her meticulously detailed nightly routine to preserve her youthful appearance. Creams, applicators, and various other products were scattered across the vanity. As she looked into the mirror, she felt a strange tightness in her chest. Time was slipping through her fingers far too quickly. Her fair complexion betrayed every wrinkle, and despite the touch–ups and subtle procedures she had undergone, she still couldn’t compare to her.
Mary.
“Why couldn’t that wretched woman have just died twenty years ago?‘ Alexia thought bitterly. “Why didn’t Grandpa get rid of her when he had the chance?!
Now, that woman was the object of her envy. Worse, the man by her side wasn’t just anyone–it was Marcus Bartz. The same “slab of meat” Maximus had once dismissed as worthless. Yet, Marcus had managed to pull the Palmer company back from the brink after Alexia’s grandfather had nearly destroyed it.
Her gaze hardened as she thought back to that time, cursing the moment her foolish grandfather convinced her to bring him into the company. Her already unbearable marriage had only grown more strained after she recommended Frank to fill Matthew’s vacancy.
[Valeria, 12 years ago]
Frank Levett had been living in exile for eight years, surviving off the wealth he had accumulated during his time as a judge. Luckily for him, the allegations against him never stuck, and he had avoided prison. But that wasn’t his greatest fear.
His greatest fear was Marcus Bartz.
Every year, Marcus paid him a visit–not to kill him, but to remind him that he could. Frank’s injured hand was a constant reminder that Marcus was capable of anything. Staying in Switzerland might have kept him safe for a time, but Frank knew that if he remained isolated, it was only a matter of time before Marcus caught up to him.
One day, Frank decided to stop running. He boarded a flight back to Valentia, fully aware of what he needed to do and that his granddaughter, Alexia, would have to help him After all, he had done her a favor–a significant one.
The moment he arrived in Valentia, Frank called Alexia. She assumed he was still abroad, so she answered without
hesitation.
“Grandpa? To what do I owe the pleasure of your call?”
“Alexia, do you remember the little favor I did for you eight years ago?”
Alexia’s stomach dropped. “Grandpa… What do you want?
“I need your help. Actually, I need your husband’s help.”
“For what? At the very least, I’d like to know what you’re up to. You know my marriage is already in shambles. Whatever you want better be urgent.”
Frank smirked. He had no intention of mentioning Marcus, so he snapped instead:
“You insolent brat! Since when do elders have to explain themselves to the younger generation?”
“Grandpa, I just need to know what you want so I can figure out how to approach the subject with Maximus. Things are tense between us, and he’s already asked me for a divorce.”
