Chapter 0267
Maximis developed an unusual relationship with Diana. Every Friday evening, they would meet and talk late into the night, always ending up at the same lookout point. Dlans often wondered why he tortured himself with memories of Mary. What could he have done so wrong to feel such guilt? Whenever she pressed him, he would quickly change the subject.
“Maximms, will you ever tell me what’s really tormenting you?” Diana asked, genuinely curious.
“Diana, I don’t think it’s a good idea to talk about it. If I told you, you’d probably hate me. And I don’t want to lose the calm you’ve brought into my life. For the first time in years, I feel some peace, and… you remind me of when I first met.” Maximus trailed off, stopping himself. He knew it wasn’t right to compare her to someone else.
“Met who? Mary?” Diana asked, unsure.
Maximus took a long sip of his beer. Their outings were always the same–pizza and beer in the car, chatting about trivial things. Hut internally, Maximus knew something deeper was stirring. She wasn’t Mary, but she gave him a sense of tranquility. Even his demeanor softened when he was around her.
“Diana, you’re too curious. Why?” he asked, looking straight ahead.
“Maybe because it feels like there’s something you want to tell me, but you’re too afraid to admit it,” she replied with a small smile.
M.ximus sighed deeply before speaking. “Diana, I’ve been married twice. My first marriage ended painfully, and it was entirely my fault. My second marriage… there’s everything in it but love. I should never have tied myself to that person. I realized my mistake too late. I lost the most precious thing I had because of my second wife. I thought she was the love of my life, but after a while, I saw how wrong I was. By then, it was too late. I’ve lost so much, Diana… too much.”
“Maximus…” Diana said softly, watching as a single tear escaped down his cheek.
“My first wife had a child… but not mine. It was my brother Peter’s. Peter died 15 years ago, and I wanted to take care of that child. At the very least, I wanted to apologize for all the harm I caused her. I hoped to be part of her life, but Mary never gave me the chance. I don’t know why she left. I’ve searched for her all this time, but it’s like she disappeared into thin air. It hurts to think about whether something might have happened to her or the baby.”
‘Maximus, don’t jump to terrible conclusions. Bad news always finds its way to you, and it’s been 15 years. If something had happened, wouldn’t you know by now? Aren’t you one of the most powerful men in Valeria?” Diana said, reaching over to wipe the tear from his cheek. “Listen, Maximus Palmer, you’re a good person–you just make bad decisions in your personal life. In business, you’re brilliant, and I admire you for that. But let’s face it, your personal life is a mess.”
“How so?” he asked, raising an eyebrow.
“Look at your life. Your wife just had a baby, and instead of being with her, you stay late at the office. Then on Fridays, you go out with me. I mean, we’re nothing, but it’s clear she’s not your priority. So, if she’s not, why have another child with her? Just to let a nanny raise them? What’s the point of that?“”
“That baby isn’t mine!” Maximus’s voice tightened, his hands gripping the steering wheel. “If I don’t go home, it’s to avoid wanting to strangle her. I’m certain my first child with her is mine, but the others? I have my doubts.”
“Then divorce her!” Diana exclaimed. “Stop hurting yourself! There are always other options..Don’t you think it’s: better to separate? Why live a life like this–full of bitterness, betrayals, and regrets? I might be young, but I’m not stupid. You don’t love your wife anymore, but you won’t leave because you’re worried about appearances. Are you punishing yourself for what you did to Mary?” She looked at him, her eyes sharp and probing.

Diana, for her part, had started to feel something strange for this man, though she wasn’t ready to admit it. She knew, however, that what she was doing wasn’t right. Regardless of how troubled his marriage was, she couldn’t justify getting involved with someone married. That’s why she kept her feelings to herself, choosing instead to simply listen to the tormented man beside her. For the first time, he was letting his true emotions spill out,
