Chapter 0273
After a brief conversation with the clinic director, Maximus stepped out of the office. An overwhelming urge to smoke hit him. He made his way to the smoking area and sat on a bench, watching people come and go. For a moment, he wondered what it would be like to live a normal life. From a young age, he’d been raised with one idea: all the power of a great company would someday be his. He never had the chance to consider taking a gap year or enjoying a carefree life. That was something he envied about his brother–Peter had always lived differently.
“Maximus, what would you do with so much freedom? Where would you go?” he murmured to himself. He had been lost in thought, puffing on his cigarette, when a nurse pulled him back to reality. “Mr. Palmer, the results of your tests are ready. Dr. Dante Rovers says you can see them now.” “Great. I’ll be there in a moment,” Maximus replied, stubbing out his cigarette in a nearby trash bin.
As he made his way to the director’s office, it felt like his legs were made of lead. Each step drained the air from his lungs. What would he do after learning the truth? Would he still love his children after this? What if none of them were his? He knew he wasn’t the best father, but in his own way, he cared deeply for his kids. Even if it wasn’t obvious to them, he felt it. Lucius hated him. Laura feared him. Paul was lost in his own world. And Maurice youngest genuinely adored him. That little boy was the one who brought warmth to his heart.
Of all his cren, Maurice’s paternity scared him the most. He’d already done one test and was convinced the boy was his, but he repeated it for peace of mind, needing all the results from the same lab on the same date.
“Mr. Palmer, I have the results here. Would you like me to open them, or would you prefer to do it yourself?” Rivers asked carefully.
“Rivers, open them and tell me the results,” Maximus said, swallowing the lump in his throat.
“All right. Let’s start with Maurice,” the doctor said, opening the envelope. He read through the document and then smiled. “The compatibility is 99.99%. He is your son, Mr. Palmer. Here, take a look.”
Maximus let out a long sigh of relief. Deep down, he’d known Maurice had to be his, but he couldn’t be sure until
now.
“Go on,” Maximus said, his voice tense with nerves.
“Laura… Let’s see. Let me open this one,” the doctor began carefully tearing the envelope.
“No need,” Maximus interrupted. “I already know she’s not mine. You don’t have to check.”
“Well, the envelope’s already open,” the doctor replied, glancing at the report. “But it’s clear she’s definitely your daughter. She inherited her mother’s beauty, but the test confirms 99.99% compatibility.”
Maximus felt as though a dagger had been driven into his chest. Laura… was his daughter? For all these years, he’d treated her differently, keeping her at arm’s length, convinced she wasn’t his. And now this? She was his little girl? How was this possible? How could life be so cruel?
me to think of it, Mrs. Catherine had very fair skin and light eyes,” the doctor continued nonchalantly. “Laura might have skipped a generation and taken after her paternal grandmother.”
Maximus was still lost in his thoughts, reeling from the revelation. The daughter he’d rejected all this time was truly his.
“All right. Let’s move on to Paul,” the doctor said, picking up another envelope.
