Serenity drove home, her backpack safely holding the photographs Maximus had given her of her father. She had a bright smile on her face. She hadn’t attended classes that day, but she’d spent a wonderful day with her cousin and uncle. She imagined that this was what some of her days could be like in the future. Plus, her father hadn’t shown up,
so she assumed she’d managed to outwit her bodyguards.
When she arrived home, it was nearly 7:00 p.m. As she walked through the door, she was greeted by her mother,
who said:
“Serenity, sweetheart! Where were you? I’ve been calling and calling, but it kept going to voicemail. I was so worried… don’t do that to me.”
“Sorry, Mom! I didn’t mean to worry you. I was in class, and I had my phone on silent,” Serenity replied, a bit
nervous.
“Go on, Serenity, wash your hands! We’re having pizza for dinner!” her father called from the TV room.
“Sure, just let me drop my backpack in my room, and I’ll join you!” Serenity said, clutching her backpack tightly. It was clear they hadn’t noticed anything out of the ordinary. Serenity felt relieved. She went into her room and carefully pulled out the photographs of her father, hiding them securely between the pages of several books on her shelf. Once satisfied, she went to her bathroom, washed her hands, and joined her family for dinner.
“John! You’re already eating? You didn’t even wait for me, you little rascal?” Serenity said playfully, clearly in a good mood.
Marcus and Valerie were sitting on the large sofa. Marcus had one arm around Valerie while the other held a slice of pizza. Valerie smiled at her daughter and invited her to sit down.
“Hurry, sweetheart! It’ll get cold!”
After dinner and watching a children’s movie, Valerie and John retired to their respective rooms. Valerie helped John take a bath, put on his pajamas, and get ready for bed. It had been a long day of walking, and the little boy was exhausted.
“Sleep well, my little one! This week your grandmothers will be back from their well–deserved vacation, and you’ll have two beautiful ladies taking care of you.”
Valerie and Marcus had sent Emma and Camille to spend a few days at a luxurious retreat. The idea was to let them relax at an exclusive hotel and spa. For now, Marcus was calm, but he had no doubt that once they returned, the house would be a whirlwind of activity again.
After tucking John in, Valerie left his room and headed to her own. She was tired and had already told Marcus she planned to go to bed early. Marcus, on the other hand, still had documents to review in his study. His work with Palmer Group was taking up more time than he’d anticipated.
Back in the living room, Marcus and Serenity were the last ones left. He saw an opportunity to get to the bottom of things with his daughter.
“Serenity, sweetheart… Philip called me today. You told your mother you were at the university, but I know you weren’t. What were you doing with Maximus?” Marcus’s tone was unfamiliar to Serenity, stomer than she was used to.
“Dad… I’m sorry I lied. I ran into him at the university. He has a daughter and wants her to study there,” Serenity replied, feeling intimidated by her father’s piercing; gaze.
Marcus was usually kind and affectionate, but he couldn’t and being lied to. Right now, Serenity wasn’t being

honest, and he didn’t understand why.
“Serenity, I need you to tell me the truth,” Marcus said, grabbing her wrist.
Serenity flinched, startled by his behavior. It was so unlike him, and it was clear he knew everything.
