Chapter 0037
“Peter!”
“Yes, big brother? Do you think being the CEO intimidates me? It doesn’t. It hasn’t for a long time. Grandma gave me a responsibility, and you have no right to contradict what she asked me to do. If you have nothing else to add, I’m going to hang up, Maximus. And don’t even think about coming after me, because in the heart of Valeria, you may be king, but outside of it? You’re nothing Out here, you lose.”
While the tense exchange continued in the car, Calum and Mary chatted on the restaurant terrace, waiting for their pizza.
“So, you’re going to live with Peter?” Calum asked in perfect–Valentian.
“Yes. I was staying at his brother’s house, but their grandmother thought it’d be better for me to live
with Peter.”
“Well, I think Grandma made the right call. Peter’s not a bad man, despite what people think. Less than a year ago, I was about to lose my business. My wife was sick, and I had nothing left to pawn or sell. Peter was a regular here. One night, I told him I’d have to close the restaurant. The next morning, he showed up with a check full of zeros to cover my debts. He bought the place and put it in my name, and whatever was left over, he told me to use it to improve the restaurant.”
“You’re talking about Peter?”
“Of course! He’s an angel. My wife is now getting treated by the best doctors in a hospital I could never afford. Peter pays all the bills without hesitation. I tell him this restaurant belongs to him, and I’m just a worker, but he insists he’s only a customer. Every month, I give him a report with the earnings and a small payment as interest on what he lent me. He only accepts it because we’ve argued about it, and he doesn’t like those trivialities.”
“Wow, I just met him and thought he was a pervert!”
Calum laughed. “I won’t deny that he’s a womanizer, but as a friend and family man, Peter has a huge heart. It’s a shame his brother always tries to overshadow him. That rivalry between them isn’t healthy.”
‘So, Peter and Maximus don’t get along?”
“No. From what I know, they hate each other. I can’t say how deep it goes, but they definitely don’t get along.”
“Wow, there’s so much I don’t know about them.”
“Sometimes, it’s better not to know. But now that you’ll be living with him, you’ll see the kind of person Peter really is. Who knows, maybe you’ll end up being the love of his life!”
“No, no, I’m just living in his house. I’m not looking to fall in love,” Mary said, blushing.
“You never know. Love works in mysterious ways. That’s how it was with my Dolores and me. What started as a vacation turned into 20 years of marriage.
“Wow, that’s a long time!”

“That’s why I’m telling you not to close your heart. Love might be waiting where you least expert It. You’re still young, but with falth and reason, life will lead you where you’re meant to be.”
His words were comforting, as if her own grandfather wwere speaking to her through this man she’d just
met..
“By the way, Peter’s taking a while, and his pizza is ready. Let’s go find him–I don’t like it when he drives tired, especially at night.”
Peter had grown tired of Maxis’s insults and threats, so he ended the call with a final warning. His
expression was cold and irritated when he was interrupted by a soft knock on the window.
