Chapter 0424
“I’ll get to work immediately,” Frederick assured him.
Marcus ended the call, the weight of the revelation settling heavily on him. If Peter was alive or if someone had gone to great lengths to impersonate him this could unravel everything Marcus thought he knew.
“Marcus, I know you’re thinking about Valerie…”
“I can’t give her news like this, Frederick, especially when we’re not certain about anything. Tell me exactly what happened at the airport.”
“My flight was delayed, so I ended up waiting around and didn’t get here until almost 4:00 AM. While I was going through customs, I accidentally bumped into that man. My cane fell to the floor, and he immediately picked it up for me. Marcus, it was his voice and his face–I’m sure of it But it was like he didn’t recognize me. He just asked If I was okay and apologized, saying he’d been distracted. After that, we both crossed customs, and he quickly walked out of the terminal. I couldn’t follow him.”
“This sounds ridiculous. After all these years? No, it can’t be. The universe wouldn’t be that cruel…”
“Marcus, I think you need to read the entire investigation. I’ve gone through it, but my memory isn’t what it used to be. I’m sure there are things in those files that will interest you–and a few things your wife might need to know as well.”
“Frederick, you know as well as I do that, in Valerie’s condition, I can’t share this with her. Right now, the most Important thing is for her to have a peaceful pregnancy.”
“I know, my friend. But what are you going to do when all the skeletons from those files come crashing out? You need to go through everything carefully and decide your next steps.”
Marcus remained silent, staring at the image frozen on his monitor.
“Marcus? Are you still there?”
“Yes, Frederick,” Marcus finally replied, his voice strained. “It’s just… I don’t know what I’d do if he were alive. You know I’ve never really been able to accept his death. I’ve just tried to move forward. And now, I’m happily married to the woman who was supposed to be his fiancée. How could I even begin to explain that?”
For a moment, Frederick put himself in Marcus’s shoes. The situation was anything but simple. Running into a man who resembled Peter presented a host of complications. What struck Frederick most was that in his years of protecting and working closely with Marcus, he’d learned to read people. The man at the airport hadn’t seemed to recognize him at all, and his apology felt genuine. That left Frederick with an odd sense of unease.
“Marcus, don’t let your anxiety take over. We need to stay calm and think clearly about what’s happening. Maybe I’m wrong, but we can always investigate further.”
“You’re right,” Marcus said, exhaling deeply. “I’m jumping to conclusions. We need to investigate. Assign one of your best men to look into this.”
“Don’t worry, I’ll handle it. Once I have solid information, I’ll let you know. In the meantime, I need you to go through those files you’ve been avoiding And Marcus, you need to close the Frank Levett matter. You can’t leave that chapter open any longer. Your life has moved on, but he was a key player in everything. You need to deal with him soon.
I know, Frederick. I’ll visit him tomorrow.”
“Well, Marcus, it is tomorrow. If you haven’t noticed, it’s 500 AM, and you haven’t slept. Make yourself a strong coffee, and I’ll see you in the office in a few hours.”
