“Grandpas, I’m getting sleepy. I think I want to go to bed,” Ethan interjected, rubbing his eyes. 

“Ethan! I expected more fight from you,” Theodore said with a resigned sigh. 

Theodore knew exactly what that meant: all three of them would be leaving the event, and no progress had been made between his friend and Miss Johnson. 

“Well, I guess it’s time to go. Theodore, did you decide which paintings you want to buy?” 

“Of course! I’ve got my list ready!” 

“You always love these events. I’m sure you found plenty of things to catch your eye.” 

“Yes, I’ll talk to the organizers. I’ll leave your contact information so they can reach out to negotiate the purchases.” 

Ethan, clearly exhausted, stretched out his little arms like a baby asking to be carried. Peter couldn’t resist the gesture, so he lifted the boy into his arms. With Ethan settled against his shoulder, Peter glanced again at the painting he’d been admiring earlier. He couldn’t forget the wistfulness in Celeste’s voice as she spoke about it. It felt as if part of her didn’t want to sell it. That gave him an idea. 

Not long after carrying Ethan, the boy drifted off to sleep in Peter’s arms. Peter spotted one of the event organizers and quietly requested details about the painting the price and arrangements–all while ensuring his identity would remain anonymous. 

As he headed toward the exit, Peter noticed Theodore talking to Celeste. She was gesturing in thanks, and then the two walked over together toward Peter and the sleeping Ethan. 

“Oh my! Ethan told me he’d stay with me all night,” Celeste said with a soft smile, gazing at the peacefully sleeping boy on Peter’s shoulder. 

“He thinks he’s a big boy now, but he’s still just a five–year–old baby,” Peter replied. 

“I know! You have a very bright and charming grandson. I’m so glad you all came tonight. It made me happy to see Ethan looking at my paintings–he always asks me about them in class.” 

“They’re beautiful! You clearly have a natural talent and a great eye for detail.” 

“Thank you. Too bad you can’t make a living off art,” Celeste said, her gaze drifting to her favorite painting. “Oh well…. It truly was a pleasure seeing you all here. I’ve got a long night ahead of me, though.” 

“What time does the event end?” Peter asked, 

“If all goes well, around midnight.” 

“And at that hour, how will you get home?” 

“Oh, don’t worry about me. I’ll grab a taxi. Luckily, this is a central area, and it’s easy to find one here.” 

“If you’d like, I can send a driver to take you home,” Peter offered, watching her calm demeanor closely. 

“No, no! I couldn’t ask that of you. You’re a guest–please don’t trouble yourself. Take Ethan home; he needs his rest. I’m amazed he managed to stay awake until nine tonight.” 

Theodore lingered nearby, admiring other paintings and giving the two space. To him, they looked like bashful schoolkids trying to extend their conversation 

“Shall we go?” Peter asked, finally reaching Theodore near the paintings by the exit.

“No, we’re going home.”
